Spikeys are common enemies appearing inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars andits remake. Much likeSpinies, they have red spiked shells, are normally immune to jump attacks, and are sometimes dropped down byLakitus. They are encountered inMushroom Way,Bandit's Way, thePipe Vault, andBooster Pass.
In battle, Spikeys usually attack by rolling up into aSpiny Egg before striking. However, if all other enemies have been defeated, they instead shoot a spike at the target, which deals 50% more damage than usual. Spikeys often attack in groups of two or three, and are sometimes accompanied in battle by either aParatroopa orFrogog. In Bandit's Way, they also appear alongsideGoombas andK-9s, while inBooster Pass they appear alongside either another Spikey or a Paratroopa.
Spikeys first appear in the last section of Mushroom Way, which wander around the area after being dropped by a Lakitu hovering overhead. A couple of Spikeys hide behind bushes to ambush Mario as he walks by. If they miss, they return into hiding. The Spikeys that appear in Bandit's Way are more aggressive, attacking Mario on sight and actively pursuing him in the event they miss.
In Booster Pass, they serve as obstacles within the level's hidden obstacle course, which can only be accessed after pressing a certainswitch inBooster Tower. The obstacle course serves as a training ground forBooster'sApprentices. After Mario unlocks this area, he may dodge or battle the Spikeys to reach a trio oftreasure boxes. They also appear during theGoomba-thumping game. Mario loses a point each time he jumps on one.
Spikeys also have stronger green and purple counterparts known asSpikesters andUrspikes. Additionally, Spikeys have an unused variant known asSuper Spike, described by the game's Shogakukan guide as appearing inLand's End.
