Spells,[1] also referred to asmagic blasts,[2] are recurring hazards in theSuper Mario franchise, being used as a projectile mainly from theMagic Wands ofKoopalings andMagikoopas. Generally, it is simply a harmful fire-like blast, but sometimes it is used to summon other obstacles and enemies or to transform objects such asblocks into them. Spells in theSuper Mario franchise are almost always made up of glowing geometric shapes such as circles, triangles, and squares; these patterns occur on uses of magic other than as projectiles as well, such as powering up and teleportation.
History[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
InSuper Mario Bros. 3, spells are used by all of the Koopalings exceptWendy andLemmy, who instead usecandy rings andmagical balls, respectively. They are made up of a trail of three white oval rings (colored gold in remakes) that grow larger the further from their source they get.

InSuper Mario World, spells are used by Magikoopas. One appears as a single circle, triangle, and square that blink the same colors as each other. Spells that come into contact withRotating Blocks transform the block into either items or enemies.

InNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, spells are used by both the Koopalings and byMagikoopa. Iggy uses an additional type, colored orange and with eyes, that spawns aMagmaargh when it toucheslava. Additionally, Magikoopa's spells now turnmagical platforms intoDonut Blocks. Rather than summon enemies, the spells release enemies that are visibly trapped inside larger blocks during his battle.
