Space Mines[1] are facelessMikey Mines that are suspended in midair. Direct contact with Space Mines damagesMario (orLuigi) onehealth bar and knocks him back, but they can be destroyed indirectly by striking them with aStar Bit orKoopa Shell. Despite being derived from Mikey Mines, Space Mines are more recurring than Mikey Mines and appear in greater numbers. Some Space Mines travel back and forth along preset paths communicated by temporary streaks of light. Others are fixed in one spot.
History[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, Space Mines are usually found floating in large groups that must be passed withPull Stars,Sling Pods, orbubbles. Most Space Mines hold still, spinning in place, but a few travel in lines or in circles along a glowing pink track.
Space Mines appear in the following list of galaxies and missions. If no mission is stated, Space Mines appear during all missions:
- Battlerock Galaxy ("Breaking into the Battlerock", "Topmaniac and the Topman Tribe"; immobile)
- Sling Pod Galaxy (both)
- Bubble Breeze Galaxy (both)
- Ghostly Galaxy ("A Very Spooky Sprint", "Beware of Bouldergeist", "Purple Coins in the Bone Pen"; immobile)
- Bowser Jr.'s Airship Armada (mobile)
- Sand Spiral Galaxy (immobile)
- Dreadnought Galaxy ("Dreadnought's Colossal Cannons", "Revenge of the Topman Tribe", "Topman Tribe Speed Run", "Battlestation's Purple Coins"; immobile)
- Bubble Blast Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Space Mines return inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport. Generally, they act the same as in the predecessor, though some may releasecoins,1-Up Mushrooms, or Star Bits. Moving Space Mines also no longer have a visible streak of light to track.Yoshi is incapable of eating them.
Despite both mines appearing in the game, they arelumped together as one in theSuper Mario Galaxy 2 section of theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia and theMario Portal website under the name "Mikey Mine".[2][3]
Space Mines appear in the following list of galaxies and missions. If no mission is stated, Space Mines appear during all missions:
- Bowser Jr.'s Fearsome Fleet ("Bowser Jr.'s Mighty Megahammer"; immobile)
- Bowser Jr.'s Boom Bunker ("Bowser Jr.'s Boomsday Machine" features both, "Boomsday Machine" features only mobile ones)
- Slimy Spring Galaxy (immobile)
- Flash Black Galaxy ("Jumping Around in the Dark"; immobile)
- Grandmaster Galaxy (immobile)

Naming[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Japanese paratext forSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2 recognize Space Mines andMikey Mines, their underwater counterparts, as distinct enemies with discrete nomenclature. However, theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia simply recognizes the Space Mine in theSuper Mario Galaxy 2 section of the book, and refers to Space Mines by Mikey Mine's Japanese name,「キライラ」(Kiraira). The same discrepancy exists on Mario Portal.
