Sonic the Hedgehog, commonly known as simplySonic, is the eponymous main protagonist of theSonic the Hedgehog franchise and the official mascot ofSega since 1991. His appearances in theSuper Mario franchise include theMario & Sonic series, a few years after Sega andNintendo stopped being business rivals, but he has also appeared in theSuper Smash Bros. series. His trademark power is an ability to run at supersonic speed, hence his name. Sonic is often assisted byAmy,Tails, andKnuckles, and his arch-nemesis isDr. Eggman.

For the first two games of theMario & Sonic series andSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic was voiced in English byJason Griffith, his at-the-time current voice actor in theSonic the Hedgehog franchise. For the latter four installments of theMario & Sonic series,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate,Roger Craig Smith succeeded Griffith as Sonic's English voice since the release ofSonic Free Riders andSonic Colors since 2010. Unlike Mario, Sonic usually has full voice acting.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

“Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games. In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?”

Sonic the Hedgehog
A character intro from Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary
Sonic being introduced in the Subspace Emissary

Sonic wasoriginally requested to be a playable character in the previous installment according to his creator Yuji Naka, but the idea got scrapped due to time constraints.[1] He andSnake are both introduced as playable third-partyfighters inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. Sonic is unlockable by either playing 300 Brawl matches, completingClassic with ten fighters, or playing ten hours of Brawl matches, followed by an unlock match onGreen Hill Zone. Like other unlockable fighters, Sonic can be unlocked inAdventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary as well. He is the fastest fighter, with fast attacks and moves based on those that he uses in theSonic the Hedgehog games. Sonic'sstandard special move is theHoming Attack, in which he flies right into opponents. Hisdown special move andside special move areSpin Dash andSpin Charge, respectively, which both involve him curling into a ball and ramming into opponents. Sonic'sup special move isSpring Jump, which involves him leaping off of a spring. HisFinal Smash move is using theChaos Emeralds to transform intoSuper Sonic, allowing him to fly around the stage to attack. Sonic's victory theme is directly taken from the 2006Sonic The Hedgehog game, and Sonic is the first fighter whose victory theme is not from aSuper Smash Bros. title.

Sonic does not appear in The Subspace until the end, afterThe Great Maze. He intervenes beforeTabuu can turn every fighter into trophies. Sonic is shown as a blue blur at first, and is revealed to be Sonic upon jumping on to a platform. As Sonictaunts, Tabuu's wings break apart, and then six fighters are selected to fight Tabuu in the final battle. Sonic is one of six characters who does not appear as a trophy in any of the cutscenes, besidesJigglypuff,Squirtle,Toon Link,Wolf, andZero Suit Samus.

Sonic was the final character who had been developed for the game.[2]

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U

SmashWiki article:Sonic (SSB4)

Sonic returns as a playable fighter inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, no longer having to be unlocked. Sonic is now voiced by a different voice actor in different regions. However, his voice clips are recycled from other games, with his voice clips of rising from water (only in the Wii U version), sleeping, and one of his attack grunts being archival recordings of Jason Griffith fromSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. Sonic's design is based on more recent games at the time such asSonic Colors, which in turn are based on official 2D and CG artworks. The only major differences to Sonic's moveset is that hisdown smash is a split-kick, and his Spin Dash is followed by a lunging kick afterwards. Sonic's moves inflict moreknockback whilst having a lower damage output. Sonic'sair speed and fast-falling speeds were increased, but his walking speed was made slightly slower. One of Sonic'salternate costumes is based onSilver. Besides Sonic, a stage based onWindy Hill Zone fromSonic Lost World appears in the Wii U version and the returning Green Hill Zone stage in the Nintendo 3DS version.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

SmashWiki article:Sonic (SSBU)

Sonic returns as a playable character inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, now being unlockable. The only notable difference to Sonic's basic moveset is his dash attack, which has been changed into solely a lunge kick. As Super Sonic, returns, he travels much faster than before but travels back and forth automatically at an adjustable height. Sonic's victory theme is slightly shorter than before, like several other returning fighters. Both of his home stages reappear, Green Hill Zone and Windy Hill Zone. Sonic receives benefits from universal changes, like other fighters, having much faster quick mobility; lesslanding lag with his aerial attacks; a reducedshort hop timing; the ability to perform a directional air dodge; and the ability to use any grounded attack out of a run and any of his aerial attacks while climbingladders. Sonic takes minor damage from swimming in water, like withCharizard,Incineroar, andInkling, based on his inability to swim in theSonic the Hedgehog games.

In the opening cutscene ofAdventure Mode: World of Light, Sonic tries to run away fromGaleem's large laser attack, but he slows down in an attempt to savePikachu, only for both to be caught by Galeem. Sonic is located in theSacred Land ofthe Dark Realm, and defeating him is required to progress.

During hisClassic Mode route, At the Speed of Sound, the fighters are based on characters in theSonic the Hedgehog series, and are fought in the following order:

  1. Fox atGreen Hill Zone
  2. Captain Falcon atFigure-8 Circuit
  3. Giant Metal Sonic atFourside (Ω form)
  4. ThreeKirbys atHalberd
  5. Sheik atMushroomy Kingdom
  6. GiantIncineroar atWindy Hill Zone

Super Mario Maker

Sonic, as he appears in Super Mario Maker.

Sonic is one of theMystery Mushroomcostumes available in theSuper Mario Bros. game style ofSuper Mario Maker. The costume can be unlocked by clearing 100 Mario Challenge on Expert difficulty or by tapping Sonic'samiibo onto the Wii U GamePad. The sprite used for Sonic is 16-bit, rather than 8-bit, being based on his sprites from the originalSonic the Hedgehog game for theSega Genesis / Mega Drive. Collecting the Mystery Mushroom for this costume plays the jingle for earning a continue from said game, and all of Sonic's sound effects are taken from the original games. Pressing+Control Pad up prompts Sonic to look upwards while playing the Ring-collecting sound. Finally, Sonic's "course clear" and "lose a life" fanfare originate fromSonic the Hedgehog 3 as the course clear and game over fanfare, respectively.

Super Mario-kun

Sonic made a special appearance inMario & Sonic at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a bonusSuper Mario-kun story released in the 500th issue of Corocoro Magazine.[3] In an adaptation ofMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Mario and Sonic act as rivals in various events. Mario is so confident he will win, he tells Sonic that if he loses, the manga will be renamed to "Super Soni-kun". Throughout the chapter, Mario gets increasingly frustrated until Sonic reveals the only reason he made a guest appearance in the manga was to get to know Mario and become friends. After making up, the two proceed to the final event, the 100m Dash, before Yoshi gives Mario aGolden Dash Mushroom. After Sonic accuses Mario of cheating, the two get into another fight.

Palutena's Guidance

  • Pit: For being a hedgehog, Sonic really isn't very spiky, is he?
  • Viridi: Yeah, I've seen spikier. It's true that you're more likely to find him curled up in a cute, harmless ball.
  • Palutena: Not so harmless. That round shape lets him Spin Dash with ease.
  • Pit: I've changed my mind. He's entirely too spiky.
  • Viridi: Spin Dashes are hard to stop, though.
  • Palutena: Just keep your cool and don't lose focus. You can stop Spin Attacks using your Orbitars or Bow.

  • After Sonic's appearance inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario was suggested to appear inSonic & Sega All-Stars Racing early in development as an exclusive character for theWii version. However,Sega did not approve as they believed that it could conflict with theMario & Sonic series.[4]
  • Near the end ofMario Takes America's development, the developers made multiple "backup" edits should they lose theSuper Mario license. One of them featured Sonic replacingMario.[5]
  • In acknowledgement of Mario's 20th anniversary,Sega released an illustration on theSonic Channel of Sonic wearing Mario's cap alongside text reading "20th HAPPY MARIO!"
