Sonic the Hedgehog, commonly known as simplySonic, is the eponymous main protagonist of theSonic the Hedgehog franchise and the official mascot ofSega since 1991. He is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog whose trademark ability is running at supersonic speed, hence his name. Sonic is headstrong, cocky, and reckless, and he values freedom and peace. Sonic is often assisted byAmy,Tails, andKnuckles, and his arch-nemesis isDr. Eggman. In theSuper Mario franchise, Sonic appears in theMario & Sonic series. It is a crossover between theSuper Mario andSonic the Hedgehog franchises.

For the first two games of theMario & Sonic series andSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic was voiced in English byJason Griffith, his then-current voice actor in theSonic the Hedgehog franchise.Roger Craig Smith succeeded Griffith as Sonic's English voice actor in 2010, having voiced him in the last four installments of theMario & Sonic series,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unlike Mario, Sonic usually has full voice acting.

Concept and creation[edit]

In April of 1990, Sega requested a game that would be capable of selling at least one million copies, compete againstNintendo'sSuper Mario franchise, and replace their then-current mascot character,Alex Kidd. Several character designs were submitted, and Sega eventually settled on a spiky teal hedgehog submitted byNaoto Ohshima named "Mr. Harinezumi" (aka "Mr. Hedgehog"), later renamed Sonic. Some of the original ideas for Sonic depicted him as being ina band, as well as having a human girlfriend namedMadonna who would have played a similar role toPrincess Peach inSuper Mario Bros., though these were scrapped during development. After a few minor adjustments and redesigning,Sonic Team (previously known as Sega CS1) developed the character's first game,Sonic The Hedgehog, a platformer for theSega Genesis/Mega Drive.[1]

In theCranky's Video Game Heroes awards ceremony inDonkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Sonic's shoes and Earthworm Jim's plasma gun can be seen next to a trash can, along with a sign saying "No Hopers," referencing the rivalry that Nintendo had with Sega at the time. This detail was removed for theremake, which was released after Sega became a third-party developer.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games[edit]

“Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games. In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?”
Shigeru Miyamoto

Sonic competes againstMario and others in Olympic events in the gameMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. He is aSpeed character, having the best speed in the game alongside Shadow, but his power and skill are merely average and his stamina is poor. Sonic wears a yellow life jacket during the swimming events, since he cannot swim; however, he moves quite fast in water as well as out of it.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]

Sonic, once again, crosses over with Mario inMario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. As inMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, he is a Speed type character and is the fastest one in the game. In theAdventure Tours mode for theDS version, Sonic andMario team up in order to put a stop toBowser andDr. Eggman's plans to ruin the 2010 Olympics and to save the snow spirits.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[edit]

Sonic appears as a Speed type playable character in the Wiiversion ofMario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and appears in the game's opening at the beginning with the other athletes, as well as later competing in110m Hurdles,Dream Hurdles andDream Uneven Bars, as well as with Mario on top ofBig Ben. Sonic appears as a character that can be spoken to in London Party mode in order to play minigames and earn stickers, andMii outfits based on him and his Super Sonic form can be unlocked.

In theNintendo 3DSversion, Sonic is included in the Heroes group, meaning that he is only playable in certain events. In the Story Mode, Sonic arrives inLondon with Tails, where they find and clear up the redPhantasmal Fog at theTower of London, concluding that Bowser is involved. The next day, Sonic and Tails head toTower Bridge, where they find more Phantasmal Fog, and clear it up with the help ofYoshi,Shadow,Silver andJet, fiding out fromBowser Jr. that Dr. Eggman is also partially responsible for the fog in the process. Sonic and Tails then move on to theBritish Museum, where they team up with Mario,Luigi andToad to clear the fog from the area and find out more about the fog. After gaining some more information, the group splits up, and Sonic heads toHorse Guards Parade, where he finds Knuckles andVector who help him fend off Bowser and clear the area of fog. Sonic then returns to theMain Stadium to meet up with the others, and helps saveCream andCheese from someimposters when the fog returns. Sonic then heads toStonehenge with Mario, Luigi, Toad, Tails andOmega, where he defeatsMagikoopa in an Event, and after Omega recovers some memory, the group head to Big Ben to confront Bowser and Dr. Eggman. Toad and Omega head back to the Main Stadium, and the remaining four confront Bowser and Dr. Eggman, with Mario and Sonic challenging the pair. When they are defeated, Sonic helps Mario seal away the Phantasmal Fog, and then accompanies Bowser and Dr. Eggman to the Main Stadium so that they can sign up for the games, and later appears at the opening ceremony. Abadge of Sonic can also be obtained from the badge machine.

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[edit]

Sonic also appears as a playable character inMario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. He is once again a Speed type character.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[edit]

Sonic returns as a playable Speed type character inMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In the 3DS version, Sonic, along with Mario, can be used in any of the game's events. This is the first Nintendo 3DSMario & Sonic game to give Sonic in-game text dialogue, as opposed to his silence in previous games.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[edit]

Sonic reappears inMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as a playable Speed-type character. Like many other characters in the game, Sonic wears appropriate clothing depending on the event. In addition to being playable in the Tokyo 2020 events, he is one of the eight characters that are playable in the Tokyo 1964 events, using his appearance fromSonic The Hedgehog. In the game's Story Mode, Sonic gets sucked into theTokyo '64 game system along with Mario, Toad, Bowser, and Dr. Eggman, and decides to compete in the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games.

Inthe arcade version, Sonic is also a Speed-type playable character. Here, he has the best speed statistic in the game, with average technique and low power.

Sonic being introduced in the Subspace Emissary

Sonic wasoriginally requested to be a playable character in the previous installment according to his creator Yuji Naka, but the idea got scrapped due to time constraints.[2] However, he would make hisSuper Smash Bros. debut as an unlockable playable character inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, and, alongsideSnake, is one of the first two non-Nintendo characters to appear as playable characters in the series. He can be unlocked by playing 300 Brawl matches, completing Classic with ten characters, playing ten hours of Brawl matches, or by having Sonic join the party inAdventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary; with any of the first three methods, the player must then defeat Sonic onGreen Hill Zone. Sonic was not originally planned to appear in the game; he was included during development in 2007, making him the final character created from the ground up to be added into the game.[3]

Sonic is the fastest character in the game, with fast attacks and movements. Several of Sonic's moves are based on those he uses in his games. His standard special is theHoming Attack, where he charges up with a very slow jump then launches with a curved trajectory into the nearest opponent. His down special and side special areSpin Dash andSpin Charge, respectively, which both have him curling into a ball and ramming into opponents. His up special,Spring Jump, creates aSpring that he bounces off of immediately, and it notably puts Sonic into a special non-helplessly falling state where he can still use his air attacks. HisFinal Smash is using theChaos Emeralds to temporarily transform intoSuper Sonic, allowing him to fly around the stage while damaging and launching opponents on contact. Sonic's victory theme is directly taken from the 2006Sonic The Hedgehog game, that tune being an arrangement of the "Act clear" theme fromSonic The Hedgehog 3 and mostSonic games after that. This makes him the first character in the series whose victory theme is ported directly from a non-Super Smash Bros. game.

In The Subspace Emissary, Sonic does not appear until the very end, afterThe Great Maze. As every fighter makes it to where Tabuu resides, he prepares his Off Waves, which would turn every character into a trophy. Just before he releases the attack, a blue blur dashes past the fighters, and rams into both of Tabuu's wings, causing the Off-Wave attack to fail. As the blue blur jumps up on a "peak", he reveals himself to be Sonic. While he taunts, Tabuu's wings break apart, and then six fighters are selected to fight Tabuu in the final battle. Sonic can be one of the six fighters, even though he only joins the mode's roster proper after completing The Great Maze and therefore beating the game. Sonic, along withJigglypuff,Squirtle,Toon Link,Wolf, andZero Suit Samus, is one of the only characters that are never seen as trophies in The Subspace Emissary.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U[edit]

SmashWiki article:Sonic (SSB4)

Artwork for Sonic fromSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U

Sonic reappears inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U as a playable character, making him the first third-party veteran fighter. This time, however, he is available from the start. He is also now voiced by Roger Craig Smith in English instead of Jason Griffith; additionally, he is now voiced by a different voice actor in different regions (e.g. he has a French voice in France). However, his voice clips are recycled voice clips from other games, with his voice clips of rising from water (only in the Wii U version), sleeping, and one of his attack grunts being archival recordings of Jason Griffith fromSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. His appearance has been updated to reflect his design in his more recent games such asSonic Colors, which in turn are based on official 2D and CG artworks. One of his alternate colors in this game seems to be based offSilver.

Sonic's moveset is almost completely unchanged fromSuper Smash Bros. Brawl; the only real changes are that his down smash from the previous game (a back-and-forth Spin Dash) has been replaced with a split-kick, while his dash attack (a Spin Dash) has him perform a lunging kick afterwards. Sonic's overall damage output is lowered, but many of his attacks deal more knockback. Sonic's air speed and fast-falling speeds are both faster, while his walking speed is slightly slower.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

SmashWiki article:Sonic (SSBU)
Sonic the Hedgehog from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Artwork of Sonic inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate

Sonic returns as a playable character inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. As with all characters who were not available from the start of the game in the originalSuper Smash Bros., Sonic is an unlockable character. Sonic's basic moveset is mostly unchanged aside from his dash attack, which is now solely a lunge kick. His Final Smash, Super Sonic, is greatly modified. Instead of having free movement, Super Sonic automatically zips back and forth across the screen at speeds faster than in the prior game while the player can adjust his elevation. It is loosely similar toSuper PAC-MAN. As with several other returning characters, Sonic's victory theme has been slightly shortened compared to the previous installments.

Like all other characters in the game, Sonic receives benefits from universal changes: his already quick mobility is much faster; his aerial attacks have less landing lag; his short hop timing is reduced; he can directionally air dodge to aid his recovery; and he can use any grounded attack out of a run and any of his aerial attacks while climbing ladders. In a similar vein to fellow veteranCharizard and newcomersInkling andIncineroar, Sonic takes minor damage from swimming in water; this is due to him being unable to swim in his home games.

In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Sonic is present when the fighters opposeGaleem for the first time. When Galeem launches powerful beams of light to destroy everyone's bodies, Sonic joinsPikachu in running away. Sonic is faster than Pikachu, but he also extends a hand to try to pull Pikachu out of the way of one of the beams, Neither of them are fast enough to escape, and both of them are consumed by the lasers. Galeem creates the Sonic puppet fighters thatspirits are trapped in by copying Sonic. When Galeem is defeated at the end of thethe Light Realm,Dharkon takes control of the remaining fighters, puppet fighters, and spirits. This includes Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic is located in theSacred Land ofthe Dark Realm, on the path to theMaster Sword. Defeating Sonic frees him from Dharkon's control, which adds Sonic to the player's party for the remainder of World of Light. As reaching the Master Sword is part of the progression through the Sacred Land, and completing the Sacred Land is required to complete the Dark Realm, Sonic must be defeated and awakened in order to complete World of Light.

Classic Mode route[edit]

Sonic'sClassic Mode route is At the Speed of Sound. Each round, except for the last, is either a battle against a character similar to a character in theSonic the Hedgehog series or a battle which evokes a scenario from theSonic the Hedgehog series. All of the non final rounds also use music from theSonic the Hedgehog series. In specific, Round 1 is based on Tails, round 4 is based on the Power Cores fromSonic Heroes, and round 6 is based onZavok.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

Sonic, as he appears in Super Mario Maker.

Sonic is one of theMystery Mushroomcostumes available in theSuper Mario Bros. game style ofSuper Mario Maker. The costume can be unlocked by clearing 100 Mario Challenge on Expert difficulty or by tapping Sonic'samiibo onto the Wii U GamePad. The sprite used for Sonic is 16-bit, rather than 8-bit, being based on his sprites from the originalSonic the Hedgehog game for theSega Genesis / Mega Drive. Collecting the Mystery Mushroom for this costume plays the jingle for earning a continue from said game, and all of Sonic's sound effects are taken from the original games. Pressing+Control Pad up prompts Sonic to look upwards while playing the Ring-collecting sound. Finally, Sonic's "course clear" and "lose a life" fanfare originate fromSonic the Hedgehog 3 as the course clear and game over fanfare, respectively.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

Sonic made a special appearance inMario & Sonic at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a bonusSuper Mario-kun story released in the 500th issue of Corocoro Magazine.[4] In an adaptation ofMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Mario and Sonic act as rivals in various events. Mario is so confident he will win, he tells Sonic that if he loses, the manga will be renamed to "Super Soni-kun". Throughout the chapter, Mario gets increasingly frustrated until Sonic reveals the only reason he made a guest appearance in the manga was to get to know Mario and become friends. After making up, the two proceed to the final event, the 100m Dash, before Yoshi gives Mario aGolden Dash Mushroom. After Sonic accuses Mario of cheating, the two get into another fight.

Palutena's Guidance[edit]

  • Pit: For being a hedgehog, Sonic really isn't very spiky, is he?
  • Viridi: Yeah, I've seen spikier. It's true that you're more likely to find him curled up in a cute, harmless ball.
  • Palutena: Not so harmless. That round shape lets him Spin Dash with ease.
  • Pit: I've changed my mind. He's entirely too spiky.
  • Viridi: Spin Dashes are hard to stop, though.
  • Palutena: Just keep your cool and don't lose focus. You can stop Spin Attacks using your Orbitars or Bow.

Notes[edit]

Sonic celebrates Mario's 20th birthday.
The artwork
  • After Sonic's appearance inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario was suggested to appear inSonic & Sega All-Stars Racing early in development as an exclusive character for theWii version. However,Sega did not approve as they believed that it could conflict with theMario & Sonic series.[5]
  • Near the end ofMario Takes America's development, the developers made multiple "backup" edits should they lose theSuper Mario license. One of them featured Sonic replacingMario.[6]
  • In acknowledgement of Mario's 20th anniversary,Sega released an illustration on theSonic Channel of Sonic wearing Mario's cap alongside text reading "20th HAPPY MARIO!"
