- “Danger ahead! Beware of the strange toxic cloud! Don't breathe it! If you feel faint, run for higher ground and fresh air!”
- —Sign in theHazy Maze Cave,Super Mario 64 DS
Smoke appears in theSuper Mario franchise andSuper Smash Bros. series as a stage hazard. In these games, when the character walks into smoke, they start to take damage at steady intervals.
History[edit]
Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]
InSuper Mario 64 andSuper Mario 64 DS, the smoke clouds, referred to by a warningsign asstrange clouds in the former andstrange toxic clouds in the latter, appear in the toxic maze in theHazy Maze Cave. They also appear in the middle of theGoomboss Battle stage, exclusively inSuper Mario 64 DS. The cloud covers most of the ground in the toxic maze. WhenMario,Luigi,Wario, orYoshi has his head under the cloud, he loses one wedge of health on hisPower Meter every two seconds that he is submerged. InSuper Mario 64 DS, if Mario, Luigi, or Wario does not have his owncap on, he loses one wedge of his health on the first hit, then loses two wedges of his health on the second hit, and the process repeats.Metal Mario/Metal Wario andVanish Luigi are not affected by the cloud, however. InSuper Mario 64, the cloud is greenish-yellow. InSuper Mario 64 DS, it is purple instead and actually knocks the character back a bit.
InSuper Mario 64, if Mario stays in the cloud for a period of time without moving, he starts to cough, even as Metal Mario. InSuper Mario 64 DS, the same alarm sound that plays when a character is low on health underwater or infreezing water also plays when in the cloud. The coughing sound effect is removed as well; however, characters still appear to cough (unless Luigi and Wario are using theirPower Flower abilities).
Super Princess Peach[edit]
InSuper Princess Peach, the substance, now called smoke byMessage Blocks, appears in theFury Volcano levels. Its effect on the player is similar to the cloud inSuper Mario 64 DS, dealing knockback when it damages the player, though it deals damage at a slower rate. The smoke can be cleared temporarily by using theJoy vibe's cyclone to disperse it. The boss of Fury Volcano,Wiggler, can create smoke when its health gets low.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, poison clouds[1] appear inThe Subspace Emissary. It appears in some of the cave areas and the Great Maze. When the character enters the poison clouds, they incur damage at a much faster rate of about 2% of damage per second. The poison cannot KO the player, since it does not do any knockback, but it actually makes the character more vulnerable to enemy attacks. The player can temporarily clear the poison clouds by hitting a red switch often situated near the clouds.
