Smash Taunt
ASmash Taunt (also written in lowercase assmash taunt in the in-gametips) is a unique type oftaunt in theSuper Smash Bros. series, introduced as anEaster egg inSuper Smash Bros. Melee. It is only available toSnake,Pit, and theStar Fox characters, and only usable on specificstages. When a Smash Taunt is used, a conversation is triggered involving the character and/or their in-universe allies, with voice acting accompanied by subtitles shown at the bottom of the screen in the style of that character's original games. Smash Taunts do not serve any tangible purpose in gameplay.
To activate a Smash Taunt, the player must execute a down taunt for exactly one frame while playing as an appropriate fighter on an appropriate stage. If this is done, the character enters a unique kneeling position for a few seconds, during which they are unable to move. If they complete this animation uninterrupted, they will return to their normal state as the conversation begins. Only one Smash Taunt can be activated per match; once the initial kneeling animation has been entered (even if it gets interrupted), it cannot be entered again by any player for the rest of the match. If multiple players input a Smash Taunt at exactly the same time, only one of them (chosen at random) will execute it, with the other(s) simply taunting normally. Smash Taunts also cannot be performed while any fighter has aFinal Smash ready or has a fully assembledDragoon orDaybreak; if these conditions are met while a conversation is ongoing, it will end immediately. A conversation will also end if the character who activated it is KO'd during it, or, inSuper Smash Bros. Melee only, if they are hit at all. Smash Taunts cannot be performed onΩ form orBattlefield form stages. If a Smash Taunt is performed while Stage Morph is enabled inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, the stage will not transform until after the conversation has ended.
Each Smash Taunt has a variety of conversations it can use. The conversation used in theStar Fox characters' Smash Taunts depends on the character who activated it, while Snake's and Pit's Smash Taunts instead use a conversation discussing one of the opposing fighters in the match.
Snake's codec conversations
- SmashWiki article:Codec Conversations
This Smash Taunt appears inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. It can only be performed bySnake on theShadow Moses Island stage and is based on the codec conversations from theMetal Gear Solid series. Upon performing it, Snake establishes communication with one of his allies (Roy Campbell, Mei Ling, or Otacon), and the two of them proceed to discuss the character that Snake is fighting. If he is fighting multiple opponents, one of them will be selected at random to be the subject of the conversation.Super Smash Bros. Brawl features a unique conversation for every fighter in the game; though all of these conversations return inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game does not feature any new conversations, and the Smash Taunt cannot be performed if none of Snake's opponents in the match were inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. Due to the conversations being reused and mostly unchanged, some of the dialogue makes references to elements ofSuper Smash Bros. Brawl that are no longer applicable toUltimate, such as thepeanuts fromDiddy Kong'sPeanut Popgun being edible.
Uniquely, if Snake is KO'd during a conversation, it will be cut short with the person he is calling shouting Snake's name, a reference to the Game Over screens of theMetal Gear Solid series.
Conversations
The following lists all codec conversations aboutSuper Mario fighters.
Mario
- Colonel: Snake, you know who that is?
- Snake: You're kidding, right? It's Mario.
- Colonel: Mario made hisfirst appearance in 1981, and since then, he's become a worldwide phenomenon.
- Colonel: There's probably not a single person who doesn't know Mario. He's that famous.
- Snake: Good thing I survived long enough to meet him on the field of battle, huh.
- Colonel: This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, Snake. Now get out there and show him what you're made of. No regrets.
- Snake: Got it.
Donkey Kong
- Snake: Otacon, there's a gorilla wearing a tie here. He's huge.
- Otacon: That's Donkey Kong. As you can tell, he's got strength to spare.
- Otacon: He may be king of the jungle, but he lives in a house just like you or me. And he seems pretty smart—well, for an ape, anyway.
- Otacon: The Donkey Kong who fought that epic battle with Mario was this guy'sgrand-father.
- Snake: That was a long time ago. What about this Donkey Kong? Does he get along with Mario?
- Otacon: Nope, they're still at it. Seems like they're always competing in something—kart racing, sports, you name it.
- Snake: A chip off the old block...
Yoshi
- Snake: Otacon! What's this lizard thing?
- Otacon: That's a Yoshi. It's a dinosaur fromYoshi's Island.
- Otacon: Watch out for its long, chameleon-like tongue. If it gets you, you'll be swallowed whole.
- Snake: It lays eggs and throws them, right? ...Then it must be female.
- Otacon: ...Actually, it's a "he." At least, that's what it says.
- Snake: It talks?!
- Otacon: Yes! It talks! Well, kind of...
- Snake: Now you've got me curious. ...How about I capture one so we can see what they taste like?
- Otacon: Uhh, Snake...
Luigi
- Snake: That guy with the mustache...
- Colonel: Ha. You mean the "King of Second Bananas"?
- Snake: Hey, that's Luigi! Show him a little respect!
- Colonel: Look at that pale skin. He's been living in his brother's shadow for too long.
- Snake: That's a low blow, Colonel!
- Colonel: Face it, Snake! Once a kid brother, always a kid brother!
- Snake: Colonel, what's gotten into you?!
- Colonel:La li lu le lo! La li lu le lo! La li lu le lo!
- Snake: Colonel, snap out of it! Colonel! Coooooooloneeeeeel!
Peach
- Snake: Mei Ling, tell me what you know about Peach.
- Mei Ling: Princess Peach is the beloved ruler of theMushroom Kingdom.
- Mei Ling: She's been kidnapped numerous times byBowser.
- Snake: Sounds pretty serious...
- Mei Ling: Yes, but every time it happens, Mario ends up saving her.
- Mei Ling: Sure, he may not look like your ideal "knight in shining armor." A little on the short side, I'd say...
- Mei Ling: But still, don't you think it's romantic? I mean, to have a guy who's always there for you?
- Snake: If he was smart, he'd tell her to stop getting kidnapped.
- Mei Ling: ...You don't get a lot of dates, do you, Snake?
Bowser
- Colonel: Careful, Snake! That's the great and terrible Bowser!
- Snake: Bowser? Looks like a cheap movie monster.
- Colonel: Hardly. Bowser leads an entirearmy of monsters. But I'd worry more about his claws andfire if I were you.
- Snake: Doesn't look that tough to me. Seems kind of slow, actually.
- Colonel: Well, he is the king of Koopas. It's only natural he'd be slow.
- Colonel: But that's only because he's the heaviest fighter here—by far.
- Colonel: He's a powerhouse of destruction. Careful he doesn't flatten you.
Wario
- Snake: This guy kind of gives me the creeps.
- Colonel: That's Wario, Snake.
- Colonel: Wariofirst appeared as Mario's rival, but he really made his name in theWarioWare games.
- Colonel: Watch out for Wario'sbite. It's not just damage you take from it.
- Snake: What do you mean, Colonel?
- Colonel: Wario loves garlic. He eats whole cloves of it day and night.
- Colonel: So try not to get caught in his mouth. Once that smell gets on you, it'll stick to you for quite a while.
- Snake: ...That's a scary thought.
- Colonel: He also attacks byfarting. He can fart to fly around, too.
- Snake: By farting?! Are you kidding me?!
- Colonel: Sadly, no. I am not kidding. If his belly starts to bulge, watch out.
Diddy Kong
- Snake: Otacon, there's a chimpanzee here wearing aNintendo hat.
- Otacon: That's Diddy Kong. He's Donkey Kong's partner.
- Otacon: Not only is he lightweight, he can use a wide range of weapons as well.
- Otacon: He canfly using those barrel jets on his back, and he can shoot nuts with hisPeanut Popgun.
- Snake: Peanuts? As in the ones in the little shells? Are you serious?
- Otacon: Wait, here's the best part. You see them lying on the ground after he shoots?
- Otacon: If you pick up some of those peanuts, they'll restore your health a little.
- Snake: Hmm. Edible ammunition, huh... Times sure have changed.

Palutena's Guidance
- SmashWiki article:Palutena's Guidance
This Smash Taunt appears inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. It can only be performed byPit on thePalutena's Temple stage and is based on the conversations Pit has with other characters inKid Icarus: Uprising. Upon performing the Smash Taunt, Pit starts conversing withPalutena and/or Viridi about the character he is fighting. If he is fighting multiple opponents, one of them will be selected at random to be the subject of the conversation.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U features a unique conversation for every fighter in the game except the DLC fighters, who all use a generic conversation. Most of these conversations return inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate (albeit with Viridi's English dialogue re-recorded due to having a different voice actor), though a few returning characters use new conversations instead, and all characters who were not present inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U (as well as those who were DLC fighters in that game) also receive new conversations. The new DLC fighters use the same generic conversation fromSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, except forPiranha Plant, which has a unique conversation.
Conversations
The following lists all Palutena's Guidance conversations aboutSuper Mario fighters.
In addition to the below conversations,Mario is mentioned inPac-Man's conversation, in which Palutena says, "He was born in 1980, which means he's one year older than Mario." Additionally,Wario is mentioned inChrom's conversation, in which Viridi says, "I mean, Wario launches people with farts. Pretty sure the style of weapon doesn't make a huge difference."
Mario
- Palutena: You know who this guy is, don't you, Pit?
- Pit: Of course I do! It's Mario!
- Palutena: He was your first ally in the fight against theSubspace Army.
- Palutena: What you may not know is that he's actually quite famous. There aren't many people who don't know who Mario is.
- Pit: Man, I don't know whether to fight him or ask him for his autograph.
- Palutena: Fight first, fanboy later.
- Pit: Oh, do you think he'll sign my wings?!
Donkey Kong
- Pit: Looks like it's me versus DK.
- Palutena: His arms are like tree trunks, so his attacks are incredibly powerful.
- Palutena: Given his size, he also moves quite quickly. Combine that speed and power with his long reach, and you've got an opponent who's good at almost everything!
- Pit: Yeah...except for dressing himself. That necktie really doesn't leave much to the imagination.
- Palutena: True, but it is his signature look.
- Palutena: It's probably best not to mention it.
- Viridi: Yeah, you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of hisGiant Punches or smash attacks!
- Viridi: When he attacks you, don't use yourshield. Just get out of the way, and then counterattack.
- Palutena: And watch where you come in for a landing!
Yoshi
- Pit: It's Yoshi!
- Viridi: Let me get this straight. Yoshi lays eggs, but he's actually male?
- Pit: Uhh, shouldn't you know that, O goddess of nature?
- Viridi: There's nothing natural about this guy!
- Pit: Yeah, I see your point.
- Palutena: Well, all living beings contain both female and male elements. It appears that Yoshi is no different.
- Pit: I wonder what's inside all those eggs... Chocolate?
- Palutena: Focus, Pit. If you use your shield when Yoshi's pulling off anEgg Roll, you can grab him. Keep that in mind.
Luigi
- Pit: Look! It's Luigi!
- Viridi: Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.
- Pit: Aw, don't say that. After all, he even hadhis own year.
- Viridi: I don't remember that. Though I suppose if he's number two out of all of these fighters, that's actually pretty good.
- Pit: His attacks are no joke.
- Viridi: You're right. Have you seen hisSuper Jump Punch andGreen Missile?
- Viridi: In some ways, he might even be stronger than his brother. Too bad about that unfortunate L on his forehead...
- Pit: I'm-I'm...I'm sure that stands for "winner."
Peach
- Pit: Oh, it's Princess Peach!
- Viridi: Guess she's taking a break from being kidnapped.
- Pit: I'm so glad we never have to worry about Lady Palutena. She can take care of herself.
- Viridi: Really? Wasn't she imprisoned byMedusa for a bit there?
- Pit: That hardly counts. After all, we were just freshmen back then.
- Pit: That would never happen now that we're more experienced!
- Viridi: Peach has been in plenty of scrapes herself, so she ought to be quite experienced. And yet she never learns.
- Viridi: Sometimes I wonder if she just lets herself get kidnapped for fun.
- Palutena: I don't know about that. It seems like tossingvegetables is more her idea of fun. She'll pelt you with them the whole match if you don't watch it.
- Palutena: But she can't reload when she's jumping, so keep your eye on what she's up to.
Bowser
- Pit: When I think of Bowser, I always picture him deep inhis castle, steeling himself for a fight.
- Viridi: Or, you know,playing golf orracing a go-kart.
- Pit: He's looking pretty aggro today. Must be because he's in a fighting game.
- Viridi: WhenMario first fought Bowser, I hear he had to use anaxe to chop down a rope bridge and drop the big guy.
- Palutena: It all sounds like something from an 8-bit action movie!
- Pit: I won't lie. I'm a little scared.
- Palutena: Don't be. Bowser may be powerful, but he also leaves big openings. Fight smart and look for chances to counterattack.
Dr. Mario
- Pit: I don't think that's a real doctor.
- Palutena: I wouldn't be so sure.
- Palutena: He delivers crushing blows, so he must be very knowledgeable about anatomy.
- Viridi: He's a quack.
- Viridi: I hear he treatsviruses by randomly throwingmedication at them. Doesn't seem very safe.
- Pit: I'm so gladSkyworld doesn't have checkups.
- Palutena: Dr. Mario is slower than the regular Mario, but he's also more powerful.
- Palutena: Don't get sent to the emergency room! You don't know what kind of treatment you'll get.
Wario
The following conversation is used for Wario inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U:
- Pit: Um, Wario kind of smells.
- Palutena: That's to be expected. For hisFinal Smash, he munchesNastyGarlic and transforms into his super-antihero alter ego...
- Palutena:Wario-Man!
- Pit: Uh... Wario-Man?
- Palutena: Yes.
- Palutena: Legend has it that Wario once caught a cold, accidentally ate a piece of Nasty Garlic, and turned into Wario-Man.
- Pit: Huh. So Nasty Garlic is the key to Wario's power. Great.
- Viridi: He's a real charmer, that one.
- Palutena: Speaking of which... Eating seems to make Wario very gassy.
- Pit: Ugh! TMI!
- Palutena: I'm only telling you this for your own good. He's a ticking time bomb.
- Palutena: Watch out for his sudden farts. And all farts in general. They're gross AND dangerous.
- Pit: ...This job is really the worst sometimes.
The following conversation is used for Wario inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, mostly identical besides replacing the first "Nasty Garlic" with simply "garlic" (consistent with Wario-Man'strophy descriptions used in previous games):
- Pit: Um, Wario kind of smells.
- Palutena: That's to be expected. For his Final Smash, he munches garlic and transforms into his super-antihero alter ego...
- Palutena: Wario-Man!
Diddy Kong
- Pit: Oh, look! It's Diddy Kong.
- Viridi: He's Donkey Kong's little buddy.
- Pit: Wonder if he'd let me win for abanana.
- Palutena: Don't underestimate him just because he's a monkey. He's faster and stronger than any human.
- Pit: As long as he can't fly, I'm good.
- Palutena: He can't fly, but he does have aPeanut Popgun and an inexhaustible supply ofpeanuts to shoot at you.
- Pit: So? I love peanuts!
- Palutena: Not when they're pelting you in the face.
- Pit: I don't know. Still sounds pretty good to me.
- Viridi: Oh, Pit! What WON'T you do for a snack?
- Palutena: Fighting does take strength.
- Viridi: Anyway, if you can hit Diddy Kong at just the right angle, he'll drop hisRocketbarrel Pack.
- Palutena: However, it explodes when it lands on the ground, so watch out.
Rosalina &Luma
- Palutena: And here we have Rosalina.
- Viridi: Yes, she's the keeper of theComet Observatory and mother of the Lumas.
- Pit: Why is that comfy pillow following her? ...I love pillows!
- Palutena: THAT is a Luma. And this is no pillow fight.
- Viridi: It does look pretty plush, I have to say.
- Pit: You know, Rosalina seems kind of rough with the little guy.
- Viridi: There are plenty of Lumas, so losing a few isn't a big deal.
- Pit: Not a big deal?!
- Palutena: Lumas will sacrifice everything to protect Rosalina.
- Palutena: They might not look like much, but they're powerful enough to send you flying, so be careful.
Bowser Jr.
- Pit: Is that Bowser Jr.?
- Viridi: Yes. He's the heir to the Koopa throne.
- Palutena: I wonder if his father bought him thatJunior Clown Car. It's decked out with all sorts of bells and whistles.
- Pit: Hey, I just thought of an even better name for it. How about...the Shellicopter?!
- Viridi: ...Needless to say, the Junior Clown Car is one tricky vehicle.
- Palutena: It's immune to many attacks, so strike when Bowser Jr. is exposed.
- Viridi: So what you're saying is to hit him from above, right?
Koopalings
The first line of this conversation uses the full name of whichever Koopaling is being fought, but the rest of the conversation is identical between all seven of them.
- Palutena: That's one of the Koopalings,Larry Koopa./Roy Koopa./Wendy O. Koopa./Iggy Koopa./Morton Koopa Jr./Lemmy Koopa./Ludwig von Koopa.
- Pit: Hmm. The resemblance to Bowser Jr. is strong.
- Palutena: ThatKoopa Clown Car is the mass-produced type.
- Pit: I guess as heir to the throne, Bowser Jr. would get preferential treatment.
- Viridi: The relationship between Bowser and the Koopalings is a real mystery.
- Pit: I kind of feel bad for them.
- Palutena: That's sweet of you but not very conducive to taking them down, Pit.
In the European and Oceanian version ofSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, the following conversation is used instead, removing usages of the term "Koopalings":
- Palutena: That's one of Bowser's Minions, Larry Koopa./Roy Koopa./Wendy O. Koopa./Iggy Koopa./Morton Koopa Jr./Lemmy Koopa./Ludwig von Koopa.
- Pit: Hmm... The resemblance to Bowser Jr. is strong.
- Palutena: That Koopa Clown Car is the mass-produced type.
- Pit: I guess as heir to the throne, Bowser Jr. would get preferential treatment.
- Viridi: The relationship between Bowser and these minions is a real mystery.
- Pit: I kind of feel bad for them.
- Palutena: That's sweet of you, but not very conducive to taking them down, Pit.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate does not use this version of the conversation, as the term "Koopalings" was re-introduced to Europe and Oceania starting withMario & Luigi: Paper Jam.
Daisy
- Pit: Princess Peach?
- Palutena: Actually, that's Princess Daisy, princess ofSarasaland.
- Palutena: She was kidnapped by a space alien namedTatanga, but Mario rescued her.
- Pit: Right. Kidnapped, then rescued by Mario. Princess Peach!
- Palutena: No, Daisy doesn't get kidnapped as often as Peach does.
- Pit: OK, I'm pickin' up what you're puttin' down. "Daisy" always gets kidnapped by "Tatanga." Wink!
- Viridi: Look, Daisy is a totally different person from Peach! She's much more, like...energetic...and stuff. You know, she's a go-getter!
- Viridi: Plus, hersymbol is a daisy. Pretty cool to have a symbol that's also your name.
- Pit: Yeah, but have you ever seen Peach and Daisy in the same place at the same time?
- Palutena: Pit, if you had a symbol, it would be in the shape of an armpit.
King K. Rool
- Pit: Who's this guy? Talk about your super heavyweight!
- Palutena: That's the leader of theKremlings, King K. Rool.
- Pit: Kremlings?
- Palutena: A race of crocodile people.
- Viridi: I hear they like bananas. Blech...
- Pit: But I thought Donkey Kong was the one who liked bananas.
- Viridi: I'm pretty sure all mouth-breathing knuckle-draggers like bananas. They're like the litmus test for idiocy.
- Pit: I don't know what that means, but I LOVE BANANAS!
- Viridi: The prosecution rests!
- Palutena: Back to the fight at hand, some attacks will fail to penetrate King K. Rool's large, leathery belly.
- Palutena: You might want to consider incorporating more grabs into your battle strategy.
Piranha Plant
- Pit: Is that a...Piranha Plant?!
- Palutena: Not so loud. She'll hear you!
- Viridi: Did someone say Piranha Plant?
- Pit: Oh no.
- Viridi: I wrote my thesis on Piranha Plants! There are just so many species!
- Viridi: You got your basic Piranha Plants, yourFire Piranha Plants,Ptooies,Nipper Plants,Nipper Spores,
- Viridi:Munchers,Jumping Piranhas,Wild Ptooie Piranhas,Propeller Piranhas,Naval Piranhas,Chewies,

- Pit: Whoa!
- Viridi: I haven't even started on all the minor variations!
- Palutena: Enough, Viridi!
- Palutena: I never want to hear the word "piranha" ever again.
- Pit: I guess that means I'm not getting any fighting tips. Thanks, Viridi.

Star Fox Smash Taunts
- SmashWiki article:Star Fox Smash Taunt
Star Fox Smash Taunts appear inSuper Smash Bros. Melee,Super Smash Bros. Brawl,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS,Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unlike the other Smash Taunts, the conversations are unrelated to the other fighters in the match and instead depend on which character activated the Smash Taunt.
InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, a Smash Taunt can be performed byFox andFalco on theCorneria andVenom stages, based on the radio conversations fromStar Fox 64. Upon performing it, a short conversation begins between other members of the Star Fox team, namely Slippy, Peppy, and either Fox or Falco (whichever of the two did not activate the taunt). The conversation that plays is selected randomly from five possible conversations (four inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS), with Fox and Falco each having their own set of possible conversations. These conversations return on the Corneria stage inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, as well as on the Venom stage inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, a Smash Taunt can be performed by Fox, Falco, andWolf on theLylat Cruise stage. The conversation used depends on both which of the three characters activated it and which of the stage's five backgrounds is currently in use (Corneria, asteroid field, skirmish, dogfight, and starry space), which it periodically switches between. Unlike other Smash Taunts, the conversation does not begin immediately after the kneeling animation is complete, instead playing after the next background transition following the completion of the animation (unless the animation was completed right after the background transitions, in which case the conversation begins immediately). The conversation can include Slippy, Peppy, Krystal, Panther, Leon, Fox, Falco, and Wolf, with the character who activated the conversation always absent. These conversations return on the Lylat Cruise stage inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U (though Wolf's set of conversations is absent due to him not being playable) andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, a unique Smash Taunt appears on theOrbital Gate Assault stage. Rather than being activated within the match itself, it is activated by having all human players hold down the grab button (ZL or ZR) while selecting the stage on the stage selection screen; additionally, Fox and Falco must both be absent from the match for it to activate. There are two possible conversations, with the one that plays depending on whether ZL or ZR was held. The conversations feature Fox, Falco, Peppy, Slippy, and ROB 64.
