Slopes are indestructible diagonal surfaces that appear in mostSuper Mario games. Walking up slopes makes the player move slower, while going down slopes is faster. The player canslide down a slope if they push the down button. There are two different kinds of slopes, as classified inSuper Mario Maker:Steep Slopes andGentle Slopes. In some games, stairs function identically to slopes.
History[edit]
Donkey Kong[edit]
Slopes first appear inDonkey Kong. They only appear in25m as thegirders form a diagonal shape, creating a slope. Despite this,Mario moves the same speed as he does in the other levels.
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Both the gentle and steep slopes were introduced inWorld 1-2 ofSuper Mario Bros. 3. They solely appear in hill-themed and cave-themed stages in this game and include ones that go underwater and ones that are on the ceiling. Playable characters and enemies that walk up them tend to animate quicker, despite moving slower.
Super Mario World[edit]
InSuper Mario World, slopes are overall more common than inSuper Mario Bros. 3. Ones that act likeSemisolid Platforms were introduced inYoshi's Island 1. BlueUnshelled Koopas are able toslide down them just like Mario can.
Super Mario 64[edit]
Super Mario 64 introduces slopes to the third dimension, where they come at various angles. Some are capable of being slowly walked up, while others will cause Mario to slide if he tries. One inBob-omb Battlefield with aRed Coin on it can be walked up only by steadily continuing upwards, as stopping or going off-course will cause him to start sliding. By using midairkicks in sequence, he can climb steeper hills without sliding.Slide stages take advantage of slopes as a challenge, though he slides on these even when they are at a low angle.
Super Mario Run[edit]
InSuper Mario Run, slopes are introduced close to immediately, inUp and Over. Up and Over is the first normal course in the game, though the significance of a slope may not become apparent in this course alone. The next course,Wall-Kicking It Underground, has a mandatory Slope Slide enforced by the game's control scheme, which makes the concept very clear.Slope to Success revolves around the slope and Slope Slide mechanics.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Slopes are a placeable part inSuper Mario Maker 2. Steep and Gentle Slopes are available in all styles, and they are found in the terrain section in the Course Maker. When placed next to a ground tile, it makes a sound. The player canslide down slopes in all game styles except theSuper Mario Bros. style, and get a speed boost if theyground-pound into the slope. Slopes are styled as stairs in theSuper Mario 3D World game style in theGhost House andCastle themes, but still have the same attributes as normal slopes.
Spike Balls are affected by these slopes. When going up a slope, they will slow down and roll the other way if they do not reach the top. They slow down faster going up Steep Slopes than Gentle Slopes. When going down a slope, however, they speed up and move faster. They speed up faster on Steep Slopes than on Gentle Slopes. The player can change aConveyor Belt's height into one similar to a Steep Slope but not a Gentle Slope. If the player places manyON/OFF Trampolines inside a Steep Slope, the player and most enemies can walk on the slope as if it was a staircase.
Wario Land series[edit]
In theWario Land series starting withWario Land II, slopes appear and can be skidded down, causingWario to startrolling forward. This allows him to barrel through obstacles and travel through low passages until he hits a wall.
