“I... I ain't real clear on the details! I just know they ain't gonna be around! And just so you know, YOU ain't gonna be around...FIRST.”
Shun,Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Shun is a member of theExtension Corps underZokket inMario & Luigi: Brothership alongsideEcks andTen. He is a stout, turquoise ruffian whose body resembles a DVI/VGA connector, with a yellow-lipped mouth on his chest.[1] A running gag in the game has Shun constantly interrupted and outspoken by Ecks and Ten, with his name also acting as a pun in English on how he tends to be shunned by the other two members of the trio.

During the preparation forChilliam andBurnadette's wedding, Shun poorly disguises himself as a merchant and givesMario andLuigi alternate instructions to prepare the cake and flower crown. He tells them to get a cake fromLottacoins Island and find a rare flower fromRaynforst Island. The brothers have the option to either follow these new instructions or ignore him, sticking with the original plan of getting the cake fromSlippenglide Island and hiring an artist fromFlorall Island. If the Bros. go to Raynforst Island, Shun sabotages the flowers he advertised as a merchant and sendsSpike Zok Troopers to fight them. If they go to Lottacoins Island, they discover that Ecks ate the cake they needed and fight theZokkarang Troopers accompanying him.

When the Bros. arrive at the third Great Lighthouse, Shun will step forward to face them and prove that he is the "livest wire" of the Extension Corps. He summonsPipegunk to attack them and assists it from the background; when it is defeated, he too flees and rejoins the Extension Corps elsewhere.

According to one of theGrampy Turnips in theSoli-Tree, Shun is great at cutting fruits and vegetables.

Battle[edit]

During the battle against thePipegunk, Shun appears in the backdrop of the stage and cannot be targeted. He uses his remote to rotate the stage into the Magma Area, which changes Pipegunk's appearance to resemble magma and gives it a significant defense boost, then jumps off-screen for a number of turns. When Shun eventually reappears, Luigi can engage in a tug of war with him throughLuigi Logic to steal the remote; if successful, he throws Shun into the lava and incapacitates him. If Luigi chooses to move from the Magma Area immediately into the Ice Area, Pipegunk takes 300 HP of damage and becomes stunned, vulnerable to critical attacks. After a number of turns, Shun gets back up to shout and jump off-screen again. If Luigi chooses to move the stage from the Magma Area into the Normal Area, Pipegunk returns to its regular form and its defense returns to normal; when Shun gets back up, he shouts angrily and immediately switches the stage into the Ice Arena, buffing Pipegunk before he jumps off-screen again. He will continue to alternate the stage between the two areas (while pausing in the Normal Area to allow Pipegunk to acclimate) until Pipegunk is defeated.[2] If Luigi selected the Normal Area once and then incapacitates Shun a second time,Snoutlet will suggest swapping to the opposite side while Shun exclaims not to make sudden temperature changes as Pipegunk is "delicate", hinting to swap between the Magma and Ice Areas. During the battle againstGlohm Pipegunk, this role is performed by a dark version of Shun; this change is purely cosmetic and does not affect the gameplay.

When Mario and Luigi fight all three members of the Extension Corps together inFortress Zokket, Shun attacks by lifting a large dumbell above his head three times before throwing it at a Bro. Shun telegraphs his target by turning towards him, and the Bro. that Shun faces at the count of three has to jump to avoid getting hit. If Shun briefly loses his balance when first catching the weight, he only lifts it up twice at a slower pace before throwing it. Unless Shun makes his mark, Ecks and/or Ten will take damage instead. Shun can also lift two smaller dumbbells for both Bros. to jump over in quick succession. The first Bro. that is targeted is adjacent to the dumbbell that is lifted higher at the count of four.

Shun later reveals that the Extension Corps also have their ownBattle Plugs:

  • The three start off with the HUUUGE Iron Ball plug, causing iron balls to fall on a Bros' head if they take damage, which must be repelled with hammer. The plug will sometimes cause iron balls to drop above the Extension Corps as well.
  • Next is the PunishMush plug, causing the Bros. to take damage if they eat aMushroom.Snoutlet warns to not use any plugs that involves mushrooms.
  • Afterwards is the Theme Song plug. The trio dances and powers up.
  • After taking enough damage, the corps use the Single-Minded plug, giving the trio a combo attack: Ecks dashes into the Bros. from the side, Ten fires shots from his arm cannon, and Shun punches a punching bag. All three must be jumped over, with the exception of the punching bag which must be repelled via hammer strike. In addition to gaining the combo attack, they all combine whatever health they have remaining, and if one member takes damage, all three take damage. If the trio is countered after using the Single-Minded plug, they become frustrated with the shared damage and briefly attack themselves.
  • The final and last resort is the Invincible plug, causing the trio to become invincible for one turn before an explosion erupts from each of them. The explosion can have its damage reduced or negated withEmergency Block or the Protectus or Notdroppin plugs, and can be avoided entirely with aBoo Biscuit, but it cannot be dodged.[3] Should the Bros. survive the explosion, the Extension Corps will then be defeated.

Each member drops 5700 Experience Points and 450 Coins (for totals of 17100 and 1350, respectively), and Shun has a Max Mushroom included in his loot drop. Each member's HP is also hidden, unlike most other enemies.
