Sprite of Shroob Rex from the Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time game

AShroob Rex is a large purpleShroob-likeRex fought inShroob Castle, during the events ofMario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Shroob Rexes never appear in the overworld, and only appear in battle alongside other enemies. They appear similar to normal Rexes, but with Shroob pincers for hands and black eyes with red pupils.

In battle, they use a wide variety of attacks. First, they jump, thenGround Pound, creating a purple shockwave. This attack can be dodged byjumping. However, the timing changes depending on where the Shroob Rex Ground Pounds. If the Shroob Rex ground pounds closer toLuigi, he must jump first, followed byMario. If closer to Mario, he must jump first, followed by Luigi. If the Shroob Rex Ground Pounds at an equal distance between the two, both Mario Bros. must jump at the same time to avoid the shockwave. This attack can cause theTrip status effect.

A Shroob Rex can also spit flaming boulders at the Mario Bros. These boulders can be deflected with aHammer. When shot, the boulder may land on the ground before splitting in two and rolling towards the Bros., requiring bothBaby MarioBros. to swing their Hammers at the same time. Additionally, the Shroob Rex can fire one boulder that homes in on one Mario Bro. When deflected, the boulder rolls into the other Mario brother, and must be deflected again. If it lifts its head up before spitting out the boulder, it homes in on Mario first, and if it looks down it homes in on Luigi first. If it does not move its head, the boulder will split in two. This attack can cause theBurn status ailment.

The Shroob Rex's final attack is to do a shortFlutter Jump before charging into a Mario Bro., then running offscreen to the left and back into the other Bro from behind. This attack can be dodged or countered by jumping, but only if certain prerequisites are met. A normal-sized Shroob Rex is too tall to jump over, so the attack cannot be dodged. However, if a Mario Bro. jumps on a Shroob Rex beforehand, it becomes shorter, like normal Rexes do in other games. Shroob Rexes have two different smaller sizes they can be when stomped on. After being stomped once, the adult Bros. are able to dodge the charge attack, but a baby Bro. alone cannot clear the Shroob Rex with their smaller jump. Only after being stomped twice is the Shroob Rex flat enough to be jumped over by the babies.

At 200 HP, the Shroob Rex has the highest HP of all regular enemies, surpassing the first four bosses and on par withSwiggler.
