Short Track Relay is aSpeed SkatingEvent that appears in theWii version ofMario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. The objective of the event is for the team to complete eight laps of the course in the fastest time, with the event taking place in the Pacific Coliseum. The starting Olympic record for this event is held byDaisy with a time of 6:40.425.Toad andEspio appear as referees in this event.

Gameplay[edit]

In this event, the team must complete eight laps of the course, with each character completing two consecutive laps. To start the event, the player must shake the Wii Remote when "Go!" appears onscreen, which will give them a starting dash if done with perfect timing. If the player shakes too early however, they will commit a foul and the event will be started over. Once the character begins skating, the player can accelerate on the straight sections of the track by shaking the Wii Remote left and right, with higher speeds being reached the faster that they shake. On the corners, the player must tilt the Wii Remote to the left to turn the corners, and will receive a speed boost if they remain in the green area while turning. If the player manages to remain in the area for the entirety of the turn, they will also receive an additional speed boost when they finish turning the corner. When on straight sections, the player can also adjust their path by tilting the Wii Remote left and right rather than shaking it. The player can also follow other characters for longer amounts of time to enter their slipstream and gain a speed boost while they remain behind the character. Each character can also perform their special action once during their two laps, which gives them a speed boost and is done by pressingA Button. When the first three characters complete their final turn of their second lap, their speed will be locked and the player can stop accelerating. The player must then hand off to the next skater by swinging the Wii Remote down as the current character approaches the next one. Doing so with better timing will give the next character a speed boost when they start the event. At each character change, the player is told how their time compares to the current record, and the team with the fastest time wins the event.
