| Variant of | Koopa Shell |
Aflashing shell[1] (alternativelyflashing Shell[2] orFlashing Shell[3]), also described as aflashing kamikaze Koopa shell,[4]flashing Koopa shell,[3][4]crazy Koopa,[4] orflashing Koopa Troopa shell,[5] is a type ofKoopa Shell found only inSuper Mario World andits Game Boy Advance version. It is created when a yellowunshelled Koopa climbs into an empty shell of any color (including its own, after being ejected from it). After its transformation, the shell attempts to hitMario orLuigi by spinning around and dashing towards him. It becomes impossible to separate the Koopa from it. While chasing the player, the flashing shell defeats enemies in its path; the player scores a combo in increasingpoint values for successive enemies defeated by a single flashing shell andextra lives starting on the eighth. It is possible to respawn the yellow unshelled Koopa that climbed into the shell, possibly leading to it dodging its own shell.
Flashing shells first appear inDonut Plains 4.Jumping on a flashing shell causes the Mario Bros. to bounce upwards, but it does not damage it. Flashing shells can be defeated by aYoshi eating it, aSpin Jump, invincibility, sliding, orCaped Mario's Body Press. If any Yoshi eats one, the Yoshi gains all three shell abilities (causingsand clouds, flying, and breathing fire) as long as the shell stays in the Yoshi's mouth. If a yellow unshelled Koopa finds a nearby shell, a flashing shell can appear in#3 Lemmy's Castle, theRed Switch Palace, theSunken Ghost Ship,Valley of Bowser 2,#7 Larry's Castle,Star World 1,Awesome,Groovy, andFunky. After the player beats theSpecial Zone (or completes all 96 exits inSuper Mario Advance 2), allKoopa Troopa andKoopa Paratroopa shells becomeMario masks, including flashing shells.
