The NPC before the Sharkbones on Allsand Island,Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Sharkbones are skeletal shark-like creatures that appear as enemies inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, itsNintendo 3DS remake, andMario & Luigi: Brothership.

History[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its 3DS remake, Sharkbones are encountered inGwarhar Lagoon. In the field, Sharkbones are submerged up to their dorsal fin and swim around in the sand, but they may occasionally try to attack intruders. In combat, they always appear in groups with the dorsal fin-wearingSand Cheeps; both remain submerged up to their dorsal fin in the sands in order to disguise themselves. Both enemies are also often fought withBeanerang Bros. Their name was originally based onunused enemy name text, and it also appeared as the undead shark's name in theNintendo Power guide.[1]

In battle, Sharkbones and Sand Cheeps appear under the name????; only their dorsal fins are visible, making it hard to tell them apart. InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, the top of any Sand Cheeps present will be visible for a few seconds at the start of the battle. This, in turn, hints at the position of any Sharkbones. They attack by swimming through the sand to stop in front of one of the Mario Bros., then surface for a moment before lunging and trying to bite their target. The attack can be dodged or countered byjumping, andpoisonsMario orLuigi if they are hit. The Bros. must watch the enemies carefully to avoid jumping prematurely and hitting a leaping Sand Cheep instead. Any Sharkbones and Sand Cheeps that have attacked and were not defeated will promptly shuffle positions after their turn, making it harder to track them.

If the brothers perform aThunder Bros. attack or anAdvancedFire Bros. attack on a group of Sand Cheeps and Sharkbones, any Sharkbones that are hit will immediately attack the Mario Bros., one at a time. In addition, targeting one of the underground enemies with the Advanced Thunder Bros. andChopper Bros. attacks will reveal their identity as Luigi uppercuts them out of the ground.

InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Sharkbones are level 25, which makes them distinguishable from the level 24 Sand Cheeps. TheEasy Mode hints will also show which of the enemies named "????" are Sharkbones.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]

InMario & Luigi: Brothership, Sharkbones appear in the quicksand portions ofAllsand Island andTeenytiny Islet, although they only appear in the latter after the former is visited. Sharkbones still hide under the sand during combat, but their heads will be exposed ifstunned.[2] The bodies of Sharkbones are now visible on the overworld, rather than just the fin. Their power has been drastically increased, making them one of the strongest regular enemies in the game. They are encountered as a level 40 enemy with high POW, DEF, and HP, significantly higher than the other level 16-17 enemies on the same island; the amount of damage they can deal can well exceed Mario or Luigi's max HP and potentially KO them in one attack. Furthermore, a successful attack that doesn't KO a bro appears to have a very high chance of inflicting a DEF-down status effect. Their remaining health is hidden unlike most of the game's enemies. An NPC found just before the first Sharkbones advises Mario and Luigi to avoid them at all costs.

Sharkbones attack by sliding their fins against both Bros.; if they briefly rise above the sand they will jump over the Bro. They can also cause a tremor before rising up and biting a Bro. In pairs, the Sharkbones will repeatedly attempt to ram both Bros. while being repelled by hammer, eventually launching themselves out of the sand to attack. Sharkbones will eventually flee the battle after three turns if not defeated before then, leaving no rewards.

Sharkbones are later seen guarding the Stickem Oil reserve at the far end of the large sand pit on Allsand Island, which will trigger a battle if the Bros. get too close. Luigi will then need to use hisLuigi Logic idea to hang from a tree branch and distract the Sharkbones, allowing Mario cross over and hit the switch to release the Stickem Oil, forcing the Sharkbones to flee afterward. However, if the Bros. somehow manage to defeat this Sharkbone horde prior to releasing the Stickem Oil, they will not despawn from the world.[3]

The sidequestThe Fossil and the Bones requires the player to obtain a Sharkbone Bone from defeating a Sharkbone. Arare reef resembling several Sharkbones can be found in theColor-Full Sea, known as Ominous Reef.

UponReclusa's awakening after the second visit toFortress Zokket, Sharkbones will transform intoGlohm Sharkbones due toGlohm infusing their bones.
