AScaredy Rat is a white rat creature that first appeared inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. They often appear in haunted, dark and/or underground areas, and tend to appear in groups. Scaredy Rats appear to have black sclera, red pupils, orange feet, and huge buck teeth.

Super Mario series[edit]
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
Scaredy Rats first appear inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii where they are only found inWorld 4-
Ghost House. They are defeated the same way thatGoombas are. However, the difference between the two is that Scaredy Rats are troublesome and run quite fast. WhenMario or a teammate approaches, they stop scuttling and start jumping in place. When the player leaves, the Scaredy Rats continue scuttling. If one is stomped, all nearby Scaredy Rats will run in panic. However, if running Scaredy Rats encounter a calm rat, the frightened rats will become calm as well.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
Scaredy Rats reappear inNew Super Mario Bros. U andNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, with the same features ofNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. They appear in the levelWhich-Way Labyrinth, where in dark sections their eyes shine like aSwoop. They can also be scared away byGlowing Baby Yoshi's light. They are one of the few enemies that do not reappear inNew Super Luigi U.
Super Mario Run[edit]
Scaredy Rats reappear inSuper Mario Run, only in the levelScaredy Rat Race. They are mostly identical to their appearance in previous platformers, but are unable to jump in this game.
Mario Party series[edit]
Mario Party 9[edit]
A Scaredy Rat appears in a Captain Event known asScaredy Rat Race in the portal-like tower near the final area of the boardBoo's Horror Castle. The Scaredy Rat steals someMini Stars from each player and scuttles each turn some spaces ahead using a dice block. The current captain has to choose a player who must roll aDice Block. The player who actually reaches the Scaredy Rat defeats it and receives all the Mini Stars the Scaredy Rat has stolen.
Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]
A Scaredy Rat can be seen on theBanzai Bill's Mad Mountain board inMario Party: Island Tour and in theminigamesMatch Faker andRat-a-tat Flat, the latter of which involves players having toGround Pound the Scaredy Rats that appear to earn points. Gold Scaredy Rats also appear in Rat-a-tat Flat and are worth three points each.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
Scaredy Rats make theirPaper Mario debut in theNintendo 3DS gamePaper Mario: Sticker Star as enemies inThe Enigmansion of World 4. They maintain their appearance fromNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. In battle, Scaredy Rats can perform one of two attacks. Their main attack involves ramming into Mario. The Scaredy Rat will sometimes delay its attack in order to trick the player into blocking early. Their other attack has them trot towards Mario and steal one of hisstickers. Mario can get his sticker back by damaging or defeating the Scaredy Rat before it flees with the sticker. Blocking this attack will prevent damage, but does not prevent the Scaredy Rat from stealing the sticker; instead, doing so ensures that a weaker sticker is stolen. If Mario has no stickers, or if the Scaredy Rat is currently carrying one, it will only use its ramming attack. In rare cases, a Scaredy Rat may begin to flee with a sticker, but suddenly turn around, giving Mario a chance to get it back.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
Scaredy Rats return inPaper Mario: Color Splash with the same appearance and behavior they had inPaper Mario: Sticker Star and can be fought inMarmalade Valley,Dark Bloo Inn andToad Trainworks. There is aScaredy Rat 10-Stack in Toad Trainworks. They steal Battle Cards in this entry rather than stickers.
Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]
Scaredy Rats make a return inPaper Mario: The Origami King, with origami variants of them acting as enemies inGraffiti Underground,Picnic Road,Ninja Attraction andShroom City. Similar to theBandits from the first twoPaper Mario games, they now steal coins since neither stickers nor Battle Cards are present.
In battle, Scaredy Rats can ram Mario for 3 damage, or steal his coins and deal 1 damage. If coins are stolen, they can return them with Loose Change for 1 damage each. A group can use Stacked Rattack, which deals 6-7 damage with two Scaredy Rats, 8-9 with three, 9-11 with four, 10-13 with five, and 11-15 with six. They also have a Stacked Steal attack.
Scaredy Rats were intended to appear in the cliffside room of theSpring of Rainbows.[1]
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
A Scaredy Rat sets off the plot ofMario & Luigi: Paper Jam by scaring Luigi into knocking over abook containing thePaper Mario universe. Later in the game, onlyPaper Scaredy Rats appear as enemies. They appear only in theTwinsy Tropics Dungeon.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
Scaredy Rats appear as assistants inDr. Mario World. Their stage mode effect increases the player's base score for every light-bluevirus that are eliminated, with the base score increase being greater at higher levels, starting from 50 points at the first level to 200 points at the maximum level. In versus mode, their effect has a chance to change the color of the viruses to be of the same color after the opponent attack each time, which excludes attacks caused by clearing all viruses on their side.

Naming[edit]
"Scaredy Rat" is a pun on the term "scaredy-cat," a childish term for a coward, befitting both their behavior and their debut in aGhost House level. The use of a cat-related idiom for a rodent enemy plays into thecommon cultural association between cats and mice.
