Sayonara is an oriental city appearing inThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episodes "Mario Meets Koop-zilla" and "Karate Koopa". It is heavily based on the real-world countryJapan.

History[edit]

"Mario Meets Koop-zilla"[edit]

In "Mario Meets Koop-zilla", Sayonara is a modern metropolis filled with large buildings based onTokyo, the capital city of Japan. While most of the buildings appearing in this iteration of the city are Western-styled, some buildings in the city feature traditional Japanese architecture.Dr. T. Garden's laboratory can be found in this iteration of the city. A mountain greatly resemblingMount Fuji can also be seen in the background of this iteration.

During the episode,King Koopa under the alias ofKoop-zilla, terrorizes the city of Sayonara after eating a batch of Dr. T. Garden'sSuper Sushi.Mario, along with his friends, arrives in the city, and, after eating another batch of Super Sushi that Dr. T. Garden at his laboratory, grows to Koop-zilla's size and begins fighting Koop-zilla. Mario and Koop-zilla's fight causes a lot of destruction in the city, prompting Dr. T. Garden to come up with antidote for the Super Sushi:Super Sushi Shrinker. Towards the end of the episode, Koop-zilla is given a dose of Super Sushi Shrinker by Mario's friends, which shrinks him back to his normal size and forces him to flee through aWarp Zone through the use of aMagical Potion.

"Karate Koopa"[edit]

In "Karate Koopa", Sayonara is an older small feudal town, with all of its buildings constructed using traditional Japanese architecture. ManyNinjis are shown to reside in the older-looking iteration of the town.Misaki's dojo can be found in this iteration of the town, while Karate Koopa's pagoda can be found somewhere outside the town.

During the episode, Mario and his friends arrive in the town searching for Misaki, who they believe can help them defeat King Koopa and save theMushroom Kingdom. However, the group is soon ambushed byKarate Koopa and thePrincess andToad are captured. To rescue their friends, Mario andLuigi consult Misaki, who proceeds to teach themPlumb-Fu in his dojo.

At the end of the episode, after Mario, Luigi, and Misaki defeat Karate Koopa and rescue the Princess and Toad, the group returns to Misaki's dojo to have a traditional Japanese meal, where he awards Mario and Luigiblack belts for their efforts.

Naming[edit]

Sayonara「さようなら」(sayōnara) is Japanese for "goodbye", referring toKoop-zilla destroying the entire city in "Mario Meets Koop-zilla".
