- “Lissen up! This'll shock you! This ship is the world-renowned S.S. Chuckola! Uh-huh! We're haulin'Chuckola Cola! You hear me??? Shockin', huh?”
- —Sailor,Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
TheS.S. Chuckola (alternatively italicized),[1] also referred to as thePirate Ship,[2] is a ship landlocked intoTeehee Valley and inhabited by skeletalsailors led by a red captain inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga andMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. One of theBeanstar pieces lands onto the ship and cracks its hull.Mario andLuigi have to visit the ship in order to retrieve the piece. In the captain's quarters,[3][4] they can learn that the ship sank long ago, when Teehee Valley was an ocean—so long that the sailors have all now become undead skeletons. The duo spots a sailor taking the Beanstar piece into another room, but a guard restricts the duo's entry into said room without aMembership Card. He explains that the room is a cola cellar where the crew holdsChuckola Cola. The Mario Bros. can earn the Membership Card by visitingBink's room and completinghis minigame, which requires matching coloredbarrels into rows and columns. Upon returning to the cola cellar, the Mario Bros. find the skeleton with the Beanstar piece who offers it in return for the favor of dislodgingBloat, an obese skeleton who has gotten stuck inside a crack in the wall after drinking too much Chuckola Cola. Mario and Luigi locate a stash of dynamite hidden within the ship from using theirhammers on blue wooden planks on the left side of the boat. Mario usesFirebrand on its fuse, creating a hole in the wall and freeing Bloat. Before Mario and Luigi can collect their prize, sand begins pouring in through the hole created, with so much force that it pushes the ship back out intoOho Ocean. The ship crashes into a large rock, and it sinks into theSeabed. After this, the ship cannot be reentered for the rest of the game.
Despite being last seen on the ocean floor, the S.S. Chuckola reappears inCavi Cape inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, albeit with a different design. This is evidenced by the sign attached to a gate, in the original Japanese version of the game, calling the ship by its name. This reference was likely lost in the English version, as the ship's name "Vintage" was instead translated as an adjective.[5] InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, the ship was redesigned to further resemble its new appearance fromMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, with the same sign now bearing theChuckola Fruit insignia on the bottom right.[6]
