“It's not me who grants [everyone's wishes], mind you. No, the stickers who wield the mystical superpowers to grant those wishes are known as theRoyal Stickers.”
Kersti,Paper Mario: Sticker Star

TheRoyal Stickers are six specialstickers that first appear inPaper Mario: Sticker Star. The first five are silver crowns, with an inset jewel of a different color. The jewels are red, orange, purple, blue, and green, and each of them has a rounded top using the same color as the jewel. The sixth Royal Sticker is a golden crown with a red jewel that lacks the rounded top. The Royal Stickers come from theSticker Star, and they are contained within theSticker Comet. The Royal Stickers are the the true source of the wish granting powers attributed to the comet.Kersti, who also resides within the comet, is their caretaker. The power of the Sticker Star draws the Sticker Comet and the Royal Stickers to each other.

The Royal Stickers can fall onto people and stick to their heads, which makes their texture shiny and grants them immense power. Their eyes, if they have them, turn yellow. However, those people often lose control of said powers, and the stickers may alter their personality. While wearing a Royal Sticker, characters tend to say "shiny" and variations of the word a lot, and they are also more prone to shouting.

History[edit]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]

WhenBowser touches the Sticker Comet at theSticker Fest, the comet flies into the air and explodes. This scatters all of itsComet Pieces and five of the six Royal Stickers across theMushroom Kingdom. Each of the Royal Stickers lands in one of the game's worlds, ranging fromWorld 1 toWorld 5. The final Royal Sticker, the golden one, lands on Bowser. He uses the powers to fightMario, destroy the Sticker Fest grounds, damageDecalburg, scatter all of theToads in the town, and kidnapPrincess Peach. When Kersti meets Mario following all this, she demands that he find the Royal Stickers. When he agrees to help, she calms down and explains the stickers' powers, role, and how she is not allowed to return to the Sticker Star without all of the Royal Stickers.

Each Royal Sticker is being worn by the boss of the world, who is always found in the world's final course. Bowser has the Royal Sticker forWorld 6, the final world. When a boss with a Royal Sticker is defeated, the Royal Sticker floats and settles above the ground like aComet Piece. Collecting it clears the course and the world, with a special cutscene showing the Royal Sticker affixing itself to the cover of Mario'salbum. The cover of the album has a spot for all six Royal Stickers, with the first five being the vertices of a pentagon and the final one going in the center. Once a boss with a Royal Sticker is defeated, the only way to leave the course is to collect the Royal Sticker, as Kersti does not allow the player to leave the vicinity of the item. For every boss excluding Bowser, a storybook cutscene plays after collecting the Royal Sticker that uses a rhyming story to explain backstory elements such as how the boss received the Royal Sticker. The Royal Sticker that was obtained glows during this cutscene, and after the cutscene ends Mario gets analbum page. While the appearance of the page is not explained, given the magical powers of the Royal Stickers it is possible that they are the cause. Unlike comet pieces, Royal Stickers do not appear in courses the player has already completed. The only goal of each world's final course is a Royal Sticker, meaning after one is collected its course no longer has a goal.

Comet pieces unlocking new courses, including the ones which have the Royal Stickers, is narratively justified by the comet pieces leading Mario and Kersti toward the Royal Stickers. This happens because the Sticker Comet and the Royal Stickers are drawn to each other by the power of the Sticker Star.

The Royal Stickers and their locations are as follows:

Mario must have five of the Royal Stickers before he is able to clear World 6-1,Gate Cliff, and therefore reach the end of the game. Gate Cliff is normally an inert formation of rocks, but if the player enters the course with five Royal Stickers, the stickers will react. By tapping on the glowing stickers on the album, the glow moves onto one of the rocks of the cliff. Each of the glows matches the color of the Royal Sticker, and their positions form the vertices of a pentagon. Once all of the glows are in place, the edges of a yellow pentagon forms between the glows, which enables the player topaperize and tear out the pentagon. The pentagon of the cliff is actually theHidden Bowser Castle, flipping over to reveal itself in the album. After being placed back into the course, Bowser's Sky Castle flies into the air. It cannot be reached from sea level, forcing Mario to findWiggler. At this point in the game, he has turned intoFlutter and can attempt to fly Mario and Kersti to the castle.

Bowser's Royal Sticker has a number of special properties. It is is pointy enough to protect Bowser fromJump attacks, unless the attack is enhanced by aSuper Boot or it is the spike-proofIron Jump. Once Bowser transforms into agiant cardboard form, the Royal Sticker's points only protect his head and not his hands. However, the power of the Royal Sticker reduces the damage of all hits of all of Mario's attacks to one, no matter which of the three targets he attacks. This damage reducing effect can only be counteracted by using Kersti as a sticker, granting Mario her shiny power and allowing attacks to inflict normal damage. In the narrative, this is the only way to defeat Bowser because the only power that can push past the power of that Royal Sticker is power from something that is also from the Sticker Star. Mario automatically collects the Royal Sticker after defeating Bowser, but Bowser's Sky Castle and the game proper do not end when this happens. Instead, the game ends upon rescuing Peach. There is no storybook cutscene, as the game's ending plays out instead.

The game's ending has Mario make an undescribed wish using the power of all six Royal Stickers following Princess Peach's advice. The game cuts away from the scene, and when it returns a new Sticker Fest is being hosted at the fully repaired Sticker Fest grounds. The game's entire cast is present for this Sticker Fest, and so is the Sticker Comet. Kersti is also present, as the wish brought her back to life.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

The Royal Stickers make a few cameo appearances inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam. The red Royal Sticker's likeness is used in the design of thePapercraft Megacrinkle Goomba, which seems to have been designed after the similarly named Megasparkle Goomba. Later, the trio ofMario,Luigi andPaper Mario fightBig Pokey and Tower Power Pokey as bosses; the Tower Power Pokey appears to be wearing the second Royal Sticker once again, with the orange gem on top replaced by an orange spike.

The final Royal Sticker also appears on aBattle Card, being worn by Bowser in artwork fromPaper Mario: Sticker Star.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, thespiritPaper Bowser (Paper Mario: Sticker Star) uses Bowser's artwork fromPaper Mario: Sticker Star, showing the latter characterbreathing fire though without the flames being included. This artwork has Bowser wearing the golden Royal Sticker. Paper Bowser (Paper Mario: Sticker Star) is a Legend class Spirit, which is higher than the Ace class of the original Paper Bowser spirit. The latter spirit can be enhanced to transform it into the Paper Bowser (Paper Mario: Sticker Star) spirit.
