Royal Philips Electronics (often known simply asPhilips) is a Dutch consumer electronics company. Among other inventions, Philips co-created thecompact disc format with futureNintendo rivalSony, and from this, Philips developed thePhilips CD-i, a failed multimedia device based around the capabilities of the format. The Philips CD-i had one game of theSuper Mario franchise,Hotel Mario, althoughSuper Mario's Wacky Worlds,Mario Takes America, anda game of theDonkey Kong franchise were also licensed but never released.

Nintendo and Philips had established an agreement to co-developa CD-ROM enhancement for theSuper Nintendo Entertainment System after Nintendo and Sony scrapped a previous deal on an earlier add-on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which would eventually result in the creation of thePlayStation. With the home market exhausted, and having already found substantial success with the CD as a music distribution format, Philips tried with some success to position the CD-i as a solution for kiosk applications and industrial multimedia. One CD-i game of theSuper Mario franchise (titledHotel Mario) and three CD-i games of the seriesThe Legend of Zelda were released:Link: The Faces of Evil,Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon, andZelda's Adventure. Philips was contractually allowed to continue using Nintendo characters after the deal fell through.
