Rip Cheato is a shady character that appears inPaper Mario. His name is derived from "rip-off" and "cheater". He sellsMario items for 64coins (a reference to theNintendo 64, the consolePaper Mario was released for) in the last room ofToad Town Tunnels. He has a fewStar Pieces for sale, but he also has junk items such asDried Shrooms that Mario must buy first in order to collect all his finer wares.

Thepipe in his room leads to the blue locked house inToad Town, known as theOdd House, which is nearTayce T. The pipe makes a convenient secondary entrance to the tunnels.

• His counterpart,Chet Rippo, also appears inPaper Mario, as well as in the sequel,Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, where he looks much different.
• Rip's appearance is unique in the series in that he is a noseless humanoid wearing a lamp on his head; as such, it is unknown what species he is.Charlieton andWonky fromPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door slightly resemble him, but neither of them have lamps and the latter is spherical.
• Charlieton fromPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door andFlimm fromSuper Paper Mario are merchants similar to Rip Cheato from later games in thePaper Mario series.
