Map of Rio de Janeiro
The map of Rio de Janeiro as it appears inMario is Missing!

Rio de Janeiro's first appearance in theSuper Mario franchise is as one of the citiesLuigi has to visit in thePC andSNES versions ofMario is Missing!. As with all the other cities appearing in the game, Rio de Janeiro was invaded byKoopa Troopas sent byBowser to steal artifacts from the cities' landmarks. Luigi's task is to rescue the city by finding and returning all the missing artifacts.

In the SNES version, the Koopas steal aspotlight from theChrist the Redeemer Statue, aseashell fromCopacabana Beach, and acable car fromSugar Loaf Mountain.

In the PC version, instead of stealing from the Christ the Redeemer Statue, the Koopas instead steal aheaddress from theCarnival, and aSoccer Ball fromMaracana Stadium. Additionally, in this version, the mayor of the city is shown to beMayor Cook.

The information fromMario is Missing! mistakenly places the city to be above the Tropic of Cancer, when Rio is actually above the Tropic of Capricorn.
