History[edit]
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Regional coins first appear inSuper Mario Odyssey. They can only be used in their corresponding kingdoms to buy outfits, stickers and souvenirs in theCrazy Cap stores. There are fifty or one hundred located in most kingdoms for a total of one thousand, and their shape and design vary in each kingdom. After being collected, they are replaced with clear replicas which are worth two regular coins. TheCloud Kingdom,Ruined Kingdom,Dark Side, andDarker Side do not have regional coins. When a regional coin is collected for the first time, it makes a sound that resembles the combination of gold coins andStar Bits.
Regional coins exist in several variations:
- TheCap Kingdom hasHat-shaped regional coins, more specifically flat coins resembling top hats.
- TheCascade Kingdom hasStone Disks, likely inspired byrai stones, an old form of currency of theYap Islands inMicronesia.
- TheSand Kingdom hasPyramid-shaped regional coins, whose overall design reflects the main landmark of Tostarena, the Inverted Pyramid. They were formerly namedPyramid Coins.[1]
- TheLake Kingdom hasScale-shaped regional coins, representing theLochladies.
- TheWooded Kingdom hasNut-shaped regional coins, matching the ironwork theme of Steam Gardens and theSteam Gardeners.
- TheLost Kingdom hasLeaf-shaped regional coins, resembling the designs ofSuper Leaves.

Before the game's release, they were referred to asCity Coins.[2] It resembles an oldFlowing Hair dollar coin, the first American dollar coin manufactured in 1794/1795.
- TheSnow Kingdom hasSnowflake-shaped regional coins.
- TheSeaside Kingdom hasShell-shaped regional coins, designed after the shells of scallops, which are commonly associated with seashells.
- TheLuncheon Kingdom hasTomato-shaped regional coins, whose crystal-like shape resembles the stylized produce of Mount Volbono.
- Bowser's Kingdom hasOblong regional coins, koban withBowser's insignia on them.
- TheMoon Kingdom hasStar Bit-shaped regional coins, which are based on theStar Bits found inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2.
