Red Rings[1] (also formatted asred rings),[2] also known asred-coin rings,[3] are objects in theSuper Mario series that the player character canjump through for severalRed Coins, usually eight, to appear temporarily. The prize for collecting every Red Coin from a Red Ring always depends on what form the player is in.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Red Rings first appear inNew Super Mario Bros. WhenMario orLuigi is in hisSmall form orMini form upon collecting the final Red Coin, aSuper Mushroom appears. If he is in hisSuper form, aFire Flower appears. If he is in hisFire form orShell form, a1-Up Mushroom appears instead. Like mentioned above, the prize always depends on what form the player is in. Each Red Ring is worth 1,000points.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
InNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, Red Rings serve the same function as before. However, an item appears for every character that is onscreen and not in abubble when the final coin is collected. Fire Flowers,Propeller Mushrooms,Ice Flowers, orPenguin Suits, depending on thelevel, appear for every character who is in their Super form. Anyone who is in their Fire form,Ice form,Propeller form, orPenguin form gains a 1-Up Mushroom.
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
Red Rings also appear inSuper Mario 3D Land, making their first appearance in a 3D game of theSuper Mario franchise. They now make only five Red Coins appear instead of eight, but other than that, they function the same way. Depending on the level, they can yield a Fire Flower,Super Leaf,Statue Leaf, orBoomerang Flower when Mario or Luigi is in his Super form. Like always, when all Red Coins are collected in a powered-up form, a 1-Up Mushroom appears.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Red Rings reappear inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, where they serve nearly the same function as in the previousNew Super Mario Bros. games. The resulting Red Coins that appear from passing through the Red Rings can remain in the air as usual, slowly descend from the sky with parachutes, or be dropped by a hoppingCoin Coffer. If a player collects all of the Red Coins in aWarp Cannon level orRainbow Course, they are rewarded with aGold Flower in their inventory. Either a Fire Flower or a Super Leaf will appear if Super Mario collects the eighth Red Coin. The 1-Up Mushroom is replaced by aGold Mushroom in the modeCoin Rush.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
Red Rings reappear inNew Super Mario Bros. U, where they retain the same functions as in previous games. There is also a newGreen Ring, which has similar functions, except it generatesGreen Coins.
InNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, collecting all eight Red Coins asToadette in most forms yields aSuper Crown.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Red Rings also appear inSuper Mario 3D World andSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. They giveSuper Bells, Fire Flowers, Super Leaves, or Boomerang Flowers (depending on the level), even if another higher-tier power-up is active.
Super Mario Run[edit]
Red Rings reappear inSuper Mario Run. When Mario goes through a Red Ring, only five Red Coins appear, like inSuper Mario 3D Land. In addition, collecting all of them always grants aSuper Star.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Red Rings appear on theGolden Plains stage, where, like in theNew Super Mario Bros. games, passing through one spawns eight Red Coins; however, each one is worth five coins when collected.
Mario + Rabbids series[edit]
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]
InMario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Red Rings are encountered in the overworld, and they produce eight Red Coins. Collecting the last Red Coin unveils atreasure chest containing a new weapon. There are three for each world and an additional four aroundPeach's Castle, making for a total of sixteen Red Rings.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]
InMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Red Rings return, serving the same purpose as they did inMario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, although the reward is aPlanet Coin and a treasure chest containing coins rather than a new weapon. There is one on all five planets.
