Red-and-yellow blocks,[1] orred Blocks,[2] are switches that control platforms inNew Super Mario Bros. These switches are suspended in the air likeblocks, but they can be struck an innumerable number of times. Striking a red-and-yellow block once triggers nearby platforms to start moving or materialize. Striking it a second time makes them stop or disappear. The type of platforms impacted depends on thelevel.
The switches first appear inWorld 2-
Tower after the level'smidway point. Striking them causesrotating platforms to materialize, allowingMario (orLuigi) to reach one of the level'sStar Coins and the boss room withBowser Jr. Striking the switches again causes the rotating platforms to disappear. Red-and-yellow blocks subsequently appear inWorld 8-
Castle. Striking them causes nearbyFlatbed Ferries to move, a function similar toON/OFF Switches fromSuper Mario World. Striking the red-and-yellow blocks is necessary to collect all of the level's Star Coins.
