| Variant of | Super Star |
TheRainbow Star is anitem that appears inSuper Mario Galaxy,Super Mario Galaxy 2, andSuper Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2; it is theSuper Mario Galaxy equivalent of theSuper Star, used to prevent confusion between Super Stars andPower Stars. When collected, it transformsMario intoRainbow Mario (orLuigi into Rainbow Luigi), causing him to become rainbow-colored and leave a trail of light behind him whenever he runs. In this form, he is invincible, releasesStar Bits from damaging enemies, can break through certain objects and obstacles (such asChomps andBoulders), can run faster, and canjump both farther and higher. Falling, either into space or into ablack hole, can still cause the player to lose a life. As thepower-up begins to wear off, the music, along with Mario's running speed, will get faster and faster until it wears off completely. The onlymission inSuper Mario Galaxy where a Rainbow Star is required is "The Golden Chomp."

- The Rainbow Star is the only power-up inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 that does not appear as a souvenir in the engine room ofStarship Mario.
- If the player touches another power-up while invincible inSuper Mario Galaxy, it flies high into the air. It comes back after a while, however.
- The music associated with the Rainbow Star is a remix of the music played whenBaby Mario acquires aSuper Star fromSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
- TheRainbow Starchute inMario Kart Tour is reminiscent to the Rainbow Star, although it has eyes.
