Ptooies are a type ofPiranha Plant that can hoverSpike Balls over their mouths. Many of them are also capable of walking, though some are stationed within pipes instead. Their name is an onomatopoeia for spitting.
History[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Ptooies, also referred to asPtooie Plants,[1] make their debut inSuper Mario Bros. 3 as regular enemies. A Ptooie can be identified by thespiked ball it suspends in the air over its mouth. Occasionally, Ptooies will blow the spiked ball high into the air, letting passing travelers jump between them. Ptooies can be seen walking around an area while some are in pipes resembling normal Piranha Plants blowing a spiked ball. As with standard Piranha Plants, Ptooies can be defeated withfireballs,hammers,Koopa Shells, orRaccoon orTanooki Mario's tail whips.
Ptooies first appear inWorld 6-1. They are occasionally found inIce Land while they are more common inPipe Land.
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Ptooies make a few appearances inThe Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, where they always attackMario and/or his friends on sight. They are sometimes used as guns. Unlike in the game, where they are limited to blowing a single spiked ball in the air, Ptooies can shoot a whole barrage of spiked balls in any direction.
Ptooies in the show are capable of speaking in the episode "Never Koop a Koopa," despite the fact that most members of the Piranha Plant family never speak at all.
Nintendo Adventure Books[edit]
Two Ptooies appear inKoopa Capers, presumably brought toDark Land byWendy O. Koopa, who needs one to season a potion she intends to create. Encountered byLuigi in aFortress, the plumber escapes the plants by jumping over them while absentmindedly wondering what they are doing wandering around in a dark and dank fortress, instead of being outside.
Super Princess Peach[edit]
Ptooies are enemies inSuper Princess Peach. They are depicted as light green skin, similarly toWild Ptooie Piranhas, and were given a variant namedGlad Ptooies. IfPrincess Peach usesRage to pound the ground or simply usesPoundbrella nearby, a Ptooie will lose its ball, but it is not affected otherwise. Ptooies will then simply move back and forth slowly until defeated. Even without the ball, Ptooies cannot be stomped.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]

Ptooies return inPaper Mario: Color Splash, found inMossrock Theater andthe Emerald Circus. In battle, they can blow theirSpiked Balls with enough force to fall on Mario, but without them, they bite him. They can be summoned byLemmy Koopa to assist in battle, along withCircus Bros. andJuggler Bros.
There is also a character namedPiper that is a Ptooie.
Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]
Ptooies make an appearance inPaper Mario: The Origami King, where origami Ptooies can be encountered as regular enemies in theSpring of Jungle Mist. In theShroom Citycafé, a singing Ptooie can be found alongside a singingDino Rhino and aSombrero Guy.
In battle, Ptooies share similar attributes to other Piranha Plant enemies, including a weakness tofire- andice-themed attacks. They start each battle blowing aSpike Ball into the air, and Mario will take recoil damage if he either jumps on the ball or a Ptooie's sharp teeth. Hitting a Ptooie with a hammer, including aFirst Strike, will knock the Spike Ball out of its breath. Ptooies cannot recover their Spike Balls after launching them or being attacked.
A singular Ptooie can use Ball Toss, dealing 22-26 damage, or a group of them can use Team Toss, each hitting Mario at once with their Spike Balls. Each hit deals 17 damage minimum, and a maximum of 19 with four or five Ptooies, or 20 with six.
After losing its Spike Ball, a Ptooie can use Bite, dealing 18-22 damage. Groups of Ptooies can use Bite Barrage, where they all run up to Mario and bite him. This attack has the same damage formula as Team Toss, making it functionally the same. They can also use Plant Pitch to throw another enemy at Mario, harming it in the process.
One specific Ptooie in the Spring of Jungle Mist blows aMagic Circle in the air and must be defeated to use it. This Ptooie has a unique move called Spell Toss in place of Ball Toss, dealing 42-46 damage.
Ptooies andBig Cutout Soldiers are the only enemies in the game to be able to drop largeconfetti bags.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate,Piranha Plant'sneutral special (named after the Ptooie enemy) allows it to spit out a spiked ball above itself and blow air into the spiked ball to make it hover in place in the same manner as the move's namesake. In addition, Piranha Plant can blow the spiked ball away forward or backward to strike nearby foes. This Piranha Plant also has feet like a Ptooie, but does not leave its flower pot or Warp Pipe in order to move.
On thePalutena's Temple stage, Ptooies are among the many Piranha Plant varieties mentioned briefly byViridi during thePalutena's Guidance dialogue for Piranha Plant.
Mario Kart series[edit]
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
Ptooies make theirMario Kart series (and overall fully three-dimensional) debut inMario Kart 8 Deluxe'sBooster Course Pass as obstacles inGBA Riverside Park. They blow items such asDash Mushrooms andBanana Peels instead of Spike Balls, which fall onto the course when the Ptooies are hit by an item such as aGreen Shell.[2] The Ptooies do not blow any items in Time Trials or when the item settings are not set on Normal Items.
In tweets made aboutGBA Riverside Park's appearance in theBooster Course Pass, Nintendo mistook the Ptooies forStalking Piranha Plants.[3] The mistake was later corrected.[4]
Mario Kart World[edit]
Ptooies reappear inMario Kart World in various locations, behaving the same way as before. An example of an appearance is aroute fromChoco Mountain toMoo Moo Meadows.[5] Items carried by Ptooies can now be collected directly out of their air currents. Spike Balls,Item Boxes andSuper Stars are also among the items that they can be seen carrying.[6]
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
While Ptooies do not reappear inMario & Luigi: Brothership, Piranha Plants and theirGlohm counterparts blow a Spike Ball in battle just like them.
