Prohibited Command[1] is a status ailment in mostSuper MarioRPG games. Its effect entails preventing the player from using specific commands. It first appeared inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and has appeared in everyMario & Luigi game as well as the first fourPaper Mario games.
History[edit]
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]
InSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, afterMario andMallow joinGeno while he is fightingBowyer, Bowyer will retort that a three-on-one fight is unfair. To compensate for this, the,
and
buttons will appear in front of him. Bowyer will then fire anAero at one of the buttons, which will effectively lock the ability to use that button's commands (magic, items or attacks). In the original game, only one button can ever be locked at once, although Bowyer will continually fire Aeros at the buttons every few turns until he is defeated. Bowyer'sMachine Made counterpart does this as well. In theremake, he concludes the battle by locking all three buttons, leading to a cutscene featuring theTriple Move that takes him out. DuringJohnny's post-game rematch, the items button is disabled for the entire battle.Culex 3D's crystals are also able to lock one of the three buttons.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
This ailment inPaper Mario is inflicted bySpy Guys when they attack Mario with theirhammers. The impact will dislodge one of Mario's action commands (jump, hammer or item) from the menu. Two boss fights also feature this status effect -Fuzzipede's tackle andBowser's jump attack both disable one of Mario's commands. Lost commands are restored after a couple of turns.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
In thesecond installment of the series, this ailment returns with the same effect as the previous game, but nowpartner abilities can be disabled as well. It is once again inflicted by Bowser's jump. TheNintendo Switchremake includes a counter of how many turns until the ailment wears off. Additionally, using the badgeJumpman increases Mario's jumping attack by 1 at the cost of disabling his hammer command, andHammerman has the opposite effect.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
InSuper Paper Mario, this effect, under the name "No Skills", is inflicted byTech Cursyas, theStandard Chocolate item, and theDangerous Delight item. When affected by it, the playable characters cannot use their special abilities for a period of time.Mario loses the ability toflip,Luigi loses hissuper jump, Bowser is unable tobreathe fire, andPrincess Peach loses herparasol abilities. IfMario gets this ailment while already in 3D, he will be stuck in 3D until the ailment wears off, the timer runs out, or the player switches characters.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
InPaper Mario: Sticker Star, the only time this effect occurs is inRustle Burrow, where Mario is unable to use his hammer after losing it here. He is also unable to use any of the hammerstickers he has in hisalbum. Due to the loss ofKersti, theBattle Spinner andPaperize are unavailable as well, which also occurs when she is eaten byPetey Piranha inRumble Volcano.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga andMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, theBoos inBowser's Castle can stealcommand blocks with their attacks, stopping the brothers from using them. During the last two boss fights withPopple, he can steal one of the Bros.' hammers, preventing them from using any attacks involving their hammers. In thePrima Games guide forMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Prohibited Command is listed as four different effects:Jump X,Hammer X,Hand X, andItem X.[2]
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions,Ludwig's boss battle restricts the brothers to using counterattacks to defeat him.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]
During the final battle againstShrowser, no command blocks are available and the fight can only be won by counterattacking.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story andMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, during the battle against theVacuum Helmetinside Bowser, it will suck up one of the bros' command blocks, preventing eitheritems orBros. Attacks from being used. After a few turns or after the helmet is destroyed, the Bros. will get it back.
During Mario and Luigi's battle againstBowser X in theGauntlet, using a Bros. Attack will make Bowservacuum it, so it is unavailable for five turns.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Dream Team, Mario battlesThunder Sass while only being allowed the Item Command Block (and if the player gets aGame Over, the Hint Command Block); in only this particular fight, the player can remain idle by pressing.Badge effects are also disabled during this battle. In the final battle againstAntasma, he can stealDreamy Luigi from Mario and store him in one of theAntasmunchies. Without Dreamy Luigi, Mario cannot useLuiginary Attacks, and the block for them is greyed out. Once Dreamy Luigi returns, the block is restored. (The same occurs forAntasma X andAntasmunchies X.) During the battle againstBowser Jr. in theBattle Ring, using aBros. Attack will make Bowser Jr. steal it, disabling it until the Bros. get it back.
There is also the status effectTiny, which prohibits Special Attacks from being used.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, when first exploring theTwinsy Tropics Dungeon, a group ofHammer Brossteal the bros' Command Blocks, and they must be battled in order to recover the stolen Command Blocks; once theFlee Command Block is retrieved, the player may remain idle during subsequent fights in the mission by pressing.Kamek andPaper Kamek also disable whichever Command Block has been most used by each bro late into their battle (e.g. if Mario mostly used Jump, Luigi mostly used Bros. Attacks and Paper Mario mostly used items, those Command Blocks respectively are disabled for them for a few turns). Ludwig is also able to hittheMarios andLuigi with the Tiny effect with one of hisBattle Cards, disabling Special Attacks.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
Glohm can prevent the Bros. from performing Attack Combos,Bros. Attacks, orLuigi Logic if it infects one of them inMario & Luigi: Brothership; any attempt to use those will result in the infected bro. shuddering while the one who did not get infected sighs, although the character who attempted to perform the attack can still choose another action. In theGreat Conductor's boss fight,Battle Plugs are disabled, although any recharging Battle Plugs still recharge as normal.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]
InMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, there are ways for enemies to disable the heroes' actions.Oozers have theDisarm andMuzzle Techniques, both of which have a small radius of effect. Heroes inflicted with Disarm have their arms tied byDarkmess, forbidding them from using weapon attacks for one turn. Muzzle (also referred to asSilence) covers the targets' faces with Darkmess, making them unable to useTechniques andSpark abilities (Costume abilities forRayman) for one turn as well. Oozers summoned by the SparkOozer Master can inflict these statuses on enemies.
ThePhantom in theRayman in the Phantom Show DLC can also disable abilities of heroes: his Silencing Sound Technique in his Swingin' form has the same effect as Muzzle, his Shrill Scream Technique in his Rockin' form disables heroes' weapon attacks and also repels them, and his Fright Falsetto attack in his Final form disables all both weapon attacks and Techniques (Costume abilities for Rayman) of a hero if they get hit. The Fright Sight Technique also allows for these statuses, as Fright Falsetto is used if a hero moves within the Phantom's line of sight and if they are within his range.
