Prince Pine is a character inYoshi's Safari. He is the son ofKing Fret, the prince ofJewelry Land, and a friend ofPrincess Peach. Both Prince Pine and King Fret were kidnapped byBowser during his attack on Jewelry Land, also stealing its twelve magical jewels, splitting the kingdom in half and forming aLight Realm and aDark Realm. King Fret was held in the Light Realm, while Prince Pine was imprisoned in the Dark Realm. AfterMario andYoshi defeat Bowser, Prince Pine is released.
In the game's adaptation from theSuper Mario Kodansha manga, King Fret and Prince Pine are not only kidnapped, but also cursed by the robbery of themagic gems, causing their heads to turn into a teapot and a pineapple respectively (a nod to their Japanese names) until the end of the story arc. When Peach informs Mario about what Bowser did to his friend's kingdom, he and Yoshi depart to save it, all the while Mario grows jealous at the idea that Peach and Pine may be romantically involved. After defeating Bowser in the Light Realm and saving both hostages, Bowser prepares to hand over the rest of the gems, but when he discovers how to summon the Dark Realm, he takes the gems, summons it, and runs away, taking Pine with him. Before the final battle, Mario attempts a negotiation for his release, but Bowser does not keep his end of the deal. During the final battle,Luigi sneaks into thecastle, frees Pine, and takes back the gems. Following Pine's instructions, Luigi and Mario use the gems against Bowser, finally restoring the world. Pine then returns to his normal human form.
InSuper Mario-kunVolume 9, Prince Pine is turned into aSuper Scope after chaos falls upon theMushroom Kingdom, turning everyone into electric appliances. The Super Scope is later lent to Mario in his quest to retrieve theCrystal Kinoko from Bowser. While unable to speak, Prince Pine proves himself to be alive on multiple occasions by gasping for ammunition or elongating his Super Scope form's barrel, but Mario and Yoshi are not surprised by it, thinking it is a side effect of the chaos. Once the chaos is stopped with the Crystals, Prince Pine returns to normal, physically hurt by the stress Mario put him through in his adventure, but still grateful to him for saving his kingdom and his father.
