- “Those brainy Poltergeists sure are strong, but they don't seem to be in charge of the other ghosts. I reckon they're still worth studying, though!”
- —Professor E. Gadd,Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Poltergeists (calledBoffins in the British English version of the original release) are a type ofghost inLuigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. They are orange ghosts that possess large brains and 50 HP each. WhileLuigi explores theGloomy Manor,Professor E. Gadd insists that he go to theLibrary and capture this ghost for research. AnAncient Poltergeist is the mid-boss ofOld Clockworks, and aStrong Poltergeist is the mid-boss ofTreacherous Mansion. Poltergeists also appear in the bonus mission inGloomy Manor and theOld Clockworks. A large Poltergeist calledThe Brain is the final boss for the co-op mode,ScareScraper.
Abilities[edit]
The Poltergeist has the power to move objects with telekinesis. When Luigi fights the Poltergeist, it throws books at him while he searches for it. It can even throw books at Luigi while it is being sucked into thePoltergust 5000 to get away. When theStrobulb is used on it while it is carrying a book, it blocks the light using the book, and so the player must wait until the book is thrown to stun it. It is almost always invisible, but the player can use theDark-Light Device to reveal its current location and stun it afterward. It also plays the piano during the entire battle. In the Old Clockworks bonus mission, instead of books, it throws the bricks placed around the room.
Ghost Container description[edit]
- English (United States):
These big-headed know-it-alls have swollen brains (and egos) that afford them telekinetic power. Sadly, their sense of humor seems to be underdeveloped. - English (United Kingdom):
These big-headed know-it-alls have swollen brains (and egos) that afford them telekinetic power. Sadly, this seems to come at the cost of a sense of humour.

Notes[edit]
- In the bonus missions ofGloomy Manor andOld Clockworks, if Luigi has to clear a room where a Poltergeist was fought in the campaign - theLibrary andRoundhouse respectively - a normal one will appear in the room. The same does not happen inTreacherous Mansion, despite the map of theDual Scream suggesting that the fight against the Strong Poltergeist happened in theSpace Exhibit.
