Platforms in theSuper Mario franchise are physical objects that the player character must traverse orjump across to get throughlevels or discover secrets. Platforms are seen throughout theSuper Mario franchise, and they serve as the primary terrain the player interacts with. Platforms come in many different forms and have a wide variety of functions across the franchise.
Platforms serve as ground for the player, with most serving as the floor, while some float in the air. Some platforms (mostly, though not exclusively, in two-dimensional games) can be jumped up through from below. Other platforms feature interactive elements, such as various forms oflifts that move around, or platforms that require hitting ablock or using an item to make them tangible.
In addition to standard platforms, which are objects that are specifically made for traversal, there are many non-platform objects in theSuper Mario franchise that can be stood on or jumped across in specific contexts. Most blocks, like platforms, can be stood on top of, and some blocks, such as theCloud Block,Hard Block, orunbreakable block, are frequently used as a form of platform though are still considered blocks. In addition, some entities or enemies can be stood on top of like a platform, such as thePara-Beetle orMega Mole, while not being platforms themselves.
