Piantas are a group of island-dwelling people that debuted inSuper Mario Sunshine. They are humanoid, appear in a variety of colors, and sport small palm trees growing out of the top of their heads. Their name means "plant" in Italian. Piantas typically wear grass skirts or grass dresses, although other Piantas have been seen wearing more conventional attires. Piantas are generally laidback and friendly, yet they also have a fairly short temper. Despite their placid temperament, they also boastimpressive strength.

Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

InSuper Mario Sunshine, Piantas share their island home with theNokis. While the Nokis mostly live inNoki Bay, the Piantas mainly reside inPianta Village. However, while Pianta Village is their primary home, Piantas live all over the island. Many Piantas make a living by producing and sellingfruits in small markets inDelfino Plaza. When sprayed withFLUDD or otherwise gotten wet, many of them shake off the water, then shout angrily atMario. They also shout at him if he jumps on them.
Certain Piantas can throw Mario. He can sometimes use this to his advantage by having a Pianta toss him to higher ledges and cliffs or across pits.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Piantas appear inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switchport in onegalaxy, theStarshine Beach Galaxy, which seems to be based on the different areas fromIsle Delfino. They are the only friendly characters not to have a representative onStarship Mario. The Piantas that appear are all male, and their role is similar to that of the Piantas fromSuper Mario Sunshine,hurling Mario or Luigi to various spots; Mario does not need to initiate a conversation in order to be thrown. Like inSuper Mario Sunshine, jumping onto a Pianta results in him yelling at Mario.
Mario Kart series[edit]
For theMario Kart series, Piantas mostly appear as spectators on severalcourses.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]
InMario Kart: Double Dash!!, Piantas are spectators inPeach Beach andDaisy Cruiser as well as during the award ceremony in the former course.
Piantas are featured in theDelfino Fruits brand, returning inMario Kart DS andMario Kart Wii as well.
Mario Kart DS[edit]
InMario Kart DS, Piantas are spectators inDelfino Square, which has a stone Pianta statue around the first loop of the race.
Mario Kart Wii[edit]
InMario Kart Wii, Piantas spectate in two newly added courses,Coconut Mall,Daisy Circuit as well as two classic courses,DS Delfino Square andGCN Peach Beach, and the battle courseDelfino Pier. In Coconut Mall, Piantas also indicate which is the correct escalator for racers to use, and one yellow Pianta is the shop assistant ofDelfino Dream, which can be passed through as a shortcut.
Besides Delfino Fruits, they are also in theTropical Mart brand inMoonview Highway.
Mario Kart 8 /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
InMario Kart 8 andMario Kart 8 Deluxe, Piantas appear as spectators inSunshine Airport,DS Cheep Cheep Beach andSuper Bell Subway, as well as in theMario Kart 8 Deluxe-exclusive3DS Wuhu Town. Additionally, Super Bell Subway shows Piantas running the cafés throughout the course, and a Pianta is displayed on the sign for theCoconut Cafe brand.
In theMario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, they return as spectators inWii Coconut Mall and make a new spectating appearance inPiranha Plant Cove.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
The Coconut Cafe brand is also inMario Kart Tour.
Mario Kart World[edit]
Along with Piantas returning as spectators, a blue Pianta also appears as a playable character inMario Kart World, marking his playable debut in theMario Kart series, as well as his first playable appearance outside of theSuper Mario Stadium series. Pianta is one of the heavier characters in the game, sharing his statistics withWario,Waluigi,Donkey Kong,Wiggler,Cow, andChargin' Chuck.
Pianta is unlocked as a playable character when the player is transformed into them by theKamek item for the first time, being one of the few characters unlocked this way that are not also summoned as obstacles by the item.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
InPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Piantas are one of the many peoples living inRogueport. Here, the attitude of the Piantas is different, and they are organized in the criminal organization known as thePianta syndicate, led byDon Pianta, and laterFrankie. They have control of Rogueport's west side, and are rivaling with theRobbo Thieves led byIshnail, who operate on the east side.
Mario Tennis series[edit]
Piantas appear inMario Power Tennis for theNintendo GameCube as spectators, and inMario Tennis: Power Tour for theGame Boy Advance as NPCs and spectators.
Super Mario Stadium series[edit]
Piantas are playable characters inMario Superstar Baseball andMario Super Sluggers for the first time in theSuper Mario franchise. In both installments, all the playable Piantas are males, come in the blue, red, and yellow variants, and have theLaser Beam ability. The male Red Pianta is more magenta-colored than red in theSuper Mario Stadium series. InMario Super Sluggers, while the Piantas share good chemistry with theToads andToadsworth, the Nokis have good chemistry withToadette, whose chemistry is neutral with the Piantas. In a similar manner, the Toads and Toadsworth have neutral chemistry with the Nokis. Both of them have good chemistry withMario. Their bats are trees.
InMario Superstar Baseball, Piantas are the weakest batters among all the Power characters, with the Red Pianta featuring slightly better batting than the other Pianta colors (rivalingKing Boo). They are also decent pitchers, but have poor fielding skills, and are very slow runners.
InMario Super Sluggers, all three Piantas have their batting skills improved, making it easier for them to score home runs. They are still rather slow, and they are still poor fielders. Their pitching is also slightly weaker, although the blue Pianta's pitching remains unchanged.
Mario Strikers series[edit]
Piantas appear in the first twoMario Strikers games,Super Mario Strikers andMario Strikers Charged, as spectators.
Mario Party series[edit]
Mario Party 8[edit]
Piantas appear throughoutGoomba's Booty Boardwalk inMario Party 8. Two pink females are seen hula dancing at the beginning, similar to theDoot-Doot Sisters, but have no certain purpose. Yellowchucksters toss the player about five to eight spaces ahead if the player lands on one of theirGreen Spaces. Bluefishing Piantas[1] fish a piece ofCandy for the player if their Green Space is landed on. Lastly, small purple females run the Candy shops. A blue Pianta also appears as one of the thirtySuper Mario characters racing inMoped Mayhem.
Mario Party 9[edit]
A blue Pianta makes a minor appearance inMario Party 9, in the minigamePianta Pool. During the game, he throws rings out into the pool, which the players must grab so thatCheep Cheeps can jump through them. He only tosses the rings into the pool once all of them have been used during that round.
Mario & Sonic series[edit]
In the first twoMario & Sonic games,Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games andMario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, specifically their Wii versions, Piantas appear as spectators, similarly as in theMario Kart series andSuper Mario sport spinoffs; the latter game also features a Pianta as a VIP member who rewards the player with 100 star points. InMario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Piantas are featured in theSnow Day Street Hockey event, both on the Main Street rink, where they appear from windows after a puck is shot into their box to return it as aRed orGreen Shell, and the Market Street rink, where they appear behind the fruit stands but do not affect gameplay. In theWii U version ofMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, a blue male Pianta runs the Mario item stand onCopacabana Beach.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
Piantas make a few non-physical appearances in theSuper Smash Bros. series. InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, a male and female Pianta both have their ownsticker each, and inThe Subspace Emissary, both stickers can be applied to any fighter; the male Pianta sticker reduces dizziness time by 94 frames, while the female Pianta sticker increases the power of energy-based attacks by 15 points. InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, a group of Piantas appear as a Novice-class supportspirit, and using it equips the fighter with aBanana Gun when starting a battle. The spirit battle takes place on theDelfino Plaza stage, featuring severalKirbys of varying colors meant to simulate Piantas. The spirit can be obtained by either winning this battle on theSpirit Board or by clearing the challenge of purchasing an item during a Sunday sale in theVault Shop.
Mario Sports Mix[edit]
InMario Sports Mix, Piantas appear as spectators and are often seen in several courts of the game.
Minecraft[edit]
In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack inMinecraft, blue Piantas, red Piantas, theHotel manager, thePianta mayor, and anIsle Delfino Police officer visually replace villagers.

Notes[edit]
- InEpisode 7 ofRicco Harbor, a blue Pianta near the fish market uses one of the voice clips reserved forNokis. An orange Pianta next to the Pianta-shaped tree inEpisode 8 ofPinna Park does the same. Conversely, a few Nokis will occasionally use a voice clip reserved for Piantas. This appears to be a developmental oversight.
- Black and white Piantas were included in anearly build ofSuper Mario Sunshine. Several other unused color variants of Piantas were also discovered in the game's files.
- In theSuper Mario 3D All-Stars version ofSuper Mario Sunshine, Piantas wearing glasses also have them placed behind their eyes rather than in front of them.[12]
