Paper Toads are paper incarnations ofToads, based on their appearances in thePaper Mario series, that appear inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam. They, along with many other paper entities, came out of amagical book thatLuigi accidentally knocked over in the attic ofPeach's Castle, and are scattered all across theMushroom Kingdom. As with normal Toads, they can have differently colored caps and vests, like blue and yellow.

Paper Toads are often extremely afraid of the real world and often hide in areas throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, requiringMario, Luigi, andPaper Mario to find them and assure them of their safety. At first, this is just rounding up the Paper Toads scattered in Peach's Castle, but after leaving the castle the trio has to rescue Paper Toads on missions that the player can initiate through theLakitu Info Center. In those cases,Lakitus take the Toads back to Peach's Castle. Most of the rescued Paper Toads stay in one of the back rooms in Peach's Castle, behind a door that the player cannot open, though they are seen in other parts of the castle during cutscenes. As they are crafty, curious and dexterous, they use paper and various items in the back room to build things.

Missions are often requested byToadette, as she requires Paper Toads to help her buildPapercrafts. After enough Toads are saved, they create items to send back to the trio. These include apaper trampoline, theTrio Attack Hammer, and theTrio Attacks. Aside from these, they also create theCopy Block and give it to Mario just before he and Luigi leave Peach's Castle for the first time. As the story progresses, many Paper Toads befriend their real-life counterparts. They also have a critical part in the story as being the "Toad Stairs" that take the trio fromMount Brrr toNeo Bowser Castle, and in battle as theBros. AttackToad Trail.
