NES Remix 2[edit]
In addition to the reuses of the theme,NES Remix 2 features a remix of "P Switch BGM / Toad's House" which is used in the 21st bonus stage. It incorporates elements of theRainbow Road theme fromSuper Mario Kart in the background.[2]
Building from the original theme, this remix fades in a synth-pad-driven backing track that embellishes the original harmony as a series of6/9 chords. It then switches to usingseventh chords to reharmonize the theme, repeating C minor, F dominant, D minor, and G dominant (♭9) in doubledharmonic rhythm. This spells out a ii7–V7–iii7–VI7 progression in B♭ major, but never resolves to thetonic chord of that key (aii7–V7–IΔ turnaround might be expected). Instead, the reharmonization finishes by ascending through G♭ major, A♭ major, and B♭ dominant, then resolving back to the original key of E♭ major. The ascent evokes the triumphant "Course Clear" progression fromSuper Mario Bros., and ultimately serves as aIVΔ–V7–I6/9 cadence in the initial key.
