TheP-Wing is a specialitem that debuted inSuper Mario Bros. 3. The "P" stands for "Paratroopa" or "Patapata" (the Japanese name for that enemy). In that game, it enables infinite flight forRaccoon Mario andTanooki Mario, broadly functioning similarly to theWing from the prior gameSuper Mario Bros. Special. There is a similar item inNew Super Mario Bros. U called theP-Acorn.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 3 /Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Mario animation from Super Mario Bros. 3
P-Wing P-Wing P-Wing

InSuper Mario Bros. 3, the P-Wing[1][2][3][4] (alternatively namedMagic Wing in theNintendo Entertainment System andSuper Mario All-Stars manuals[5][6]) allowsMario orLuigi to fly in the air with their Raccoon forms for an unlimited amount of time for one level only; they revert to their normal Raccoon form abilities after clearing a level. However, if the brothers are hit or receive a non-flight-based power-up within a level, they will lose the power of the P-Wing. Infinite1-Up tricks involvingstomping do not work in this form; all enemies normally worth 100 points are always worth 100 points if Mario has a P-Wing.

If a P-Wing is used from the map screen, the "P" on Mario or Luigi's body (as shown in the sprite on the left) indicates that they have P-Wing abilities. The "P" is not seen in the actual level and it is not seen again on the map screen once the level is exited which indicates Mario or Luigi has reverted to their normal abilities. A P-Wing ability will also be lost if the player usesLakitu's Cloud or aMagic Whistle with it active.

The P-Wing can be combined with theTanooki Suit. However, in order to do this, one must use a P-Wing, then enter a level that has a Tanooki Suit hidden within it (World 4-5,World 5-5,World 6-3, orWorld 7-Fortress) and collect that Tanooki Suit without losing the P-Wing's power.

P-Wings are commonly found intreasure boxes left behind after defeating certainHammer Brotherson the map screen. They can also be found in secretWhite Mushroom Houses accessible by collecting a certain amount of coins in certain levels in the odd-numbered worlds (World 1-4,World 3-8,World 5-5, andWorld 7-2), while in the even-numbered worlds (apart fromDark Land), White Mushroom Houses containAnchors. Additionally, by beating the game and restarting without resetting it, the player is rewarded with 28 P-Wings in their inventory, though only in the original NES version of the game.

Unused data inSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 shows that the P-Wing could have been in a? Block, like other power-ups, such as theSuper Leaf andFire Flower. Additionally, theOrange Mushroom House inWorld-e has Mario use a P-Wing to ascend to a box while avoiding spikes.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

Mario and a P-Wing

In theNintendo 3DS gameSuper Mario 3D Land, the P-Wing functions differently, warping Mario to the end of the course. If Mario touches a P-Wing, it will go into storage to use later. It only appears ifMario orLuigi loses 10 lives in a (skipped) normal world level (making P-WingAssist Blocks appear), or within certainMystery Boxes. Mario will lose the P-Wing if he gets any other power-up (excluding aSuper Star orInvincibility Leaf), as the P-Wing will be replaced if Mario is inSuper form or better.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

An early screenshot of New Super Mario Bros. 2. Note the blue block, which bears a heavy resemblance to those found in Super Mario Bros. 3.
The P-Wing icon in the P-Meter ofNew Super Mario Bros. 2

While the P-Wing does not appear as a power-up inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, it is seen as an icon on theP-Meter, replacing the "P" icon in the meter's original appearance inSuper Mario Bros. 3. The P-Meter (and its P-Wing icon) only appears when Mario orLuigi gets a Super Leaf (i.e. turns intoRaccoon form) or an Invincibility Leaf (i.e. turns intoWhite Raccoon form)

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Magic Wings (additionally calledRaccoon Power Wings by Toad) make their appearance in the episode "Up, Up, and a Koopa".Princess Toadstool andToad look in her castle's dungeon for a treasure chest that contains Magic Wings so they can use them to fly to Sky Land and save Mario and Luigi. Princess Toadstool refers to the Magic Wings being golden despite the wings not appearing as such.

Mario Kart series[edit]

The P-Wing makes a cameo appearance inMario Kart: Double Dash!!. It appears on the side of somecargo trucks inMushroom Bridge andMushroom City. Additionally, the license plate of the truck that has the P-Wing on it says "SMB3", a common abbreviation ofSuper Mario Bros. 3.

Mario Kart 8 /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

A kart called theP-Wing appears as a DLC kart inAnimal Crossing ×Mario Kart 8 inMario Kart 8, and is unlockable inMario Kart 8 Deluxe. The icon of the power-up appears on the kart's front hood. The back wheel guards of the kart also resemble the item.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

The P-Wing kart returns inMario Kart Tour, and two other versions, thePink Wing and theFrost Wing, also appear.

InDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, planes featuring a P-Wing emblem can be found in the levelsTrunk Twister andCrazy Clouds.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]

P-Wings appear inPuzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition. They are used to transform enemies likeGoombas andKoopa Troopas into their flying variants, such as theKoopa Paratroopa.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

InThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, P-Wings in the same design as theirSuper Mario Bros. 3 sprite can be seen being sold in the antiques shop.
