Octoombas, originally referred to asElectrogoombas,[1] are alienenemies in theSuper Mario series and first appear inSuper Mario Galaxy. Octoombas bear resemblances toGoombas and octopuses (particularly their cartoony depiction common in Japanese media), both of which contribute to the name. Octoombas have a blue body with sunken glowing eyes, scowling eyebrows, and several yellow spots. They have a snout-like mouth from which they spit rocks. Octoombas also sport an antenna on their head and use their three rounded feet to hop left and right. Octoombas glow orange while charging an attack.

Electrogoombas are first seen in the first selectablemission ofSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport and appear sporadically later on. Electrogoombas move back and forth along set paths, but when approached, they try to headbuttMario. Electrogoombas can be defeated from aspin, causing it to release threeStar Bits, or from astomp, making it drop acoin instead.[2] Electrogoombas have a more common rock-spitting variant namedOctoguy as well as a large relative,Rocto.

Electrogoombas appear in the following list of galaxies and missions. If no mission is stated, Electrogoombas appear during all missions:

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Octoombas inShiverburn Galaxy.

Octoombas reappear inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport under their current name.[3] Their attack is now to spit rocks,[4] just likeOctoguys. Octoombas are much more common than before. The game introduces two more Octoomba varieties,Elite Octoombas andOctoboos, both of which tend to appear more often later on. Octoombas do not take damage fromlava in theShiverburn Galaxy.[5]

Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Octoombas[6] are enemies inSuper Mario 3D World and itsNintendo Switchport,Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Octoombas are the last enemies introduced, and they are encountered in bonus world stages such asSuper Galaxy,Gigantic Seasick Wreck, andChampion's Road. Octoombas remain in one position and only move by rotating. They are stronger, not only by spitting three cannonballs in a straight line to attack, but also being unaffected by most attacks except aGround Pound, which is the only method to defeat them.

Dr. Mario World[edit]

Octoombas appear inDr. Mario World as assistants. They also appear in the background ofWorld 8 when an area has been cleared. In stage mode, its effect is to fill the skill meter by half of the doctor's full gauge on stage start. In versus mode, its effect is to reduce the time before the stage starts shrinking the playing field by a percentage, which can stack withScuttlebug's versus effect to further reduce the time.
