North America (Spanish:Norteamérica /América del Norte; French:Amérique du Nord; Greenlandic:Amerika Avannarleq) appears in theSuper Mario franchise as one of the seven continents ofEarth, and has a wide variety of environments, including frozen tundras, vast plains, dense rainforests, and scorching deserts. The continent contains countries such asCanada,Mexico, theUnited States of America.

Saturday Supercade[edit]
North America inSaturday Supercade is the setting in the episode "Mississippi Madness," which takes place inNew Orleans,Louisiana as evidenced by a large sign reading "Welcome to New Orleans." Other features of Louisiana are also included, such as theMississippi River, and large swamps. In the episode "Trucknapper Caper",Donkey Kong Jr. andBones travel to the American state ofTexas on their motorcycle. In the episode "Rocky Mountain Monkey Business", Donkey Kong Jr. and Bones ride through theRocky Mountains, a large mountain range in the western United States and Canada. In the episode "The Amazing Rollerskate Race", Donkey Kong Jr. and Bones go toMexico City, Mexico to supervise some rollerskaters during a rollerskating race and catch some thieves who were after their skates.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show![edit]
North America in the live-action segments ofThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show! is naturally the greater setting because every segment takes place inBrooklyn, New York, which appears also in a few animated episodes. In the episodePlummers Academy, there is an extended flashback ofMario andLuigi at theBrooklyn Plumbers Academy in Brooklyn. In the episodeFlatbush Koopa,King Koopa attempts to take overNew York City and rename it "New Koopa," with most of the episode taking place in Brooklyn andConey Island. In addition, the show's opening sequence shows Mario and Luigi in Brooklyn getting sucked down a drain pipe into theMushroom Kingdom.
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
North America as a whole is featured in the episode ofThe Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, "7 Continents for 7 Koopas." When King Koopa tries to conquer the entire Real World, he givesHip Koopa control of North America. Hip uses hismagic wand to take over all of the TV networks, causing them to broadcast nothing but a Koopathon of himself, and refuses to go off the air unless everyone in North America gives him all the money. Luigi later stops him.
Additionally, several other episodes ofThe Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 take place within the United States of America, and therefore take place within North America as well.Hollywood,California is featured in the episode "Dadzilla."Miami,Florida and theKennedy Space Center appear in the episode "Life's Ruff." The state ofKansas appears in the episode "Mush-Rumors," which also mentions the American states ofIowa andNebraska. The capital of the United States,Washington, D.C., is featured in the episode "Reptiles in the Rose Garden." Finally, New York City is featured in "Kootie Pie Rocks," and Brooklyn specifically is featured in "Recycled Koopa," "Toddler Terrors of Time Travel," and "Misadventures in Babysitting."
Nintendo Adventure Books[edit]
In the second title of theNintendo Adventure Books series,Leaping Lizards, it is stated that Luigi once savedTopeka, Kansas from a flood caused by a clog, but Mario later lies toPrincess Toadstool and states that he was the one who fixed the clog.
NES Open Tournament Golf[edit]
The United States of America is one of the three levels that are playable inNES Open Tournament Golf. In addition, Mario and Luigi's outfits in the game are based on the American flag.
Club Nintendo[edit]
Cities in North America, namely New York City and Washington, D.C., appear in several comics in the GermanClub Nintendo series.
"Super Mario: Verloren in der Zeit"[edit]
In "Super Mario: Verloren in der Zeit," VikingsErik, Baleog and Olaf are teleported into New York while Mario is also teleported to the Viking Age. the Vikings' presence in the city causes enormous chaos until some New York policemen finally arrest them.
"Mario in Mariozilla"[edit]
New York City is featured once again in "Mario in Mariozilla."Kamek casts a spell onto Mario, which causes him to grow to an enormous size. Mario searches for advice fromDr. Light, who lives in theEmpire State Building, and accidentally crashes into some buildings and skyscrapers. When he finally reaches Dr. Light's home, Mario climbs up the Empire State Building in order to talk to the doctor.
"Donkey Kong in: Banana Day 24"[edit]
In "Donkey Kong in: Banana Day 24,"Donkey Kong,Diddy Kong,Dixie Kong,Cranky Kong, andKiddy Kong travel to Washington, D.C. in order to talk to thePresident of the United States. The President then provides theKongs with a space shuttle fromCape Canaveral, Florida.
Mario is Missing![edit]
In thePC,SNES, andNES versions ofMario is Missing!, Luigi visits several cities in North America on his quest to rescue Mario. The cities included vary depending on the version of the game.

In theSuper Mario Bros. movie, Mario and Luigi live in Brooklyn, New York where they runMario Bros. Plumbing. Most of the film takes place inDinohattan, an alternate-universe version of New York City.
Mario's Time Machine[edit]
Mario travels to several locations in North America in thePC,SNES, andNES versions ofMario's Time Machine, specifically in the United States. Like inMario is Missing!, the cities included are different depending on the version of the game.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games takes place inVancouver,Canada and includes several real-world venues, includingWhistler Olympic Park andRogers Arena, which was known as Canada Hockey Place during the Olympics.
Mario Kart series[edit]
While not appearing in gameplay, North America, along with Earth's other continents, is featured on the online racing menus in most of the entries of theMario Kart series that support online play, includingMario Kart Wii,Mario Kart 7, andMario Kart 8 along with its remakeMario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Mario Kart Tour introduced new courses based on New York City (New York Minute), Vancouver (Vancouver Velocity), and Los Angeles and Santa Monica (Los Angeles Laps). New York Minute and Los Angeles Laps reappear in theBooster Course Pass DLC forMario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Two of the kingdoms inSuper Mario Odyssey are based on locations in North America. First,Tostarena in theSand Kingdom is heavily based on Mexico andMesoamerica as a whole. The kingdom is based on Mexico because the director ofSuper Mario Odyssey,Kenta Motokura, liked the country and his trip there left a strong impression on him.[1] Second,New Donk City in theMetro Kingdom is directly based on New York City. The city features several buildings that are inspired by real-world locations. The explorable area of the city has New Donk City Hall, which is based on the Empire State Building, and a triangular building based on theFlatiron Building. In addition, The kingdom's background contains structures almost identical to theChrysler Building and theBrooklyn Bridge.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
InThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario and Luigi initially live withtheir family in Brooklyn, where they runSuper Mario Bros. Plumbing. The final battle againstBowser at the end of the film takes place in Brooklyn.
