Neckys^[1][2] (alternately pluralized asNeckies)^[3] are large brown vultures first appearing inDonkey Kong Country. They have a smaller variant,Mini-Neckys, which appear more commonly than them.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong Country[edit]

Neckys are enemies inDonkey Kong Country. They have one of two behaviors: throwing coconuts while perched or flying left or right continuously. Neckys can be defeated from either beingstomped or being hit by abarrel. The coconut-throwing type can also be defeated from being rolled into. Their coconuts can damage theKongs. The flying Neckys are often required to cross gaps or to enter aBonus Barrel, such as the ones at the start ofTree Top Town andSnow Barrel Blast. There are two Necky bosses,Master Necky andMaster Necky Snr., both only ever seen by their head.

Donkey Kong Land[edit]

Neckys are enemies inDonkey Kong Land. Only the perched, nut-throwing type is ever encountered, in bothCongo Carnage andPot Hole Panic. Their defeat sprites resemble upside-down flying sprites.

Donkey Kong Country Barrel Maze[edit]

Buzzards^[4] are enemies inDonkey Kong Country Barrel Maze. They appear in levels 3, 8, and 9. Buzzards fly above the playable barrel, attempting to drop coconuts on it. If the barrel gets hit by a Buzzard's coconut, it loses some energy.

DK: King of Swing[edit]

Although Neckys do not return inDK: King of Swing, the second boss,Fire Necky, is a type of Necky.

Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast[edit]

Neckys make their first 3D appearance as obstacles inDonkey Kong: Barrel Blast. They appear inMt. Dynamite,Cranky's Temple, andTemple Heights. If a racer hits into a Necky, it latches on them, slowing them down. A Necky can be defeated by one hit, and they help a racer performWild Move combos.

Donkey Kong Bananza[edit]

Neckys reappear inDonkey Kong Bananza as enemies, marking their first appearance sinceDonkey Kong: Barrel Blast eighteen years earlier. Like the rest of theKremling Krew, Neckys make their first appearance in the game onceDonkey Kong andPauline reach thePlanet Core, where they replace a type ofVoid Company enemy seen in earlier layers; in the case of Necky, its attack patterns are based on that of theBatteroids. Like the aforementioned enemies, Neckys are typically covered in a glue-like goop (with some of their feathers poking out at the top), wear a bird-like mask, and will swoop down at Donkey Kong when he gets near. They make the same sound as the various Necky enemies and bosses in the first twoDonkey Kong Country games.

The Neckys' design inDonkey Kong Bananza have been altered to somewhat resemble that of Mini-Neckys from previousDonkey Kong titles, as they possess a much shorter neck and beak and are generally smaller in size than in their previous appearances.

In theDK Island & Emerald Rush DLC, a statue of a Necky can be collected and placed on the deck ofGangplank Galleon.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Neckys only appear in the background of two stages in theSuper Smash Bros. series. InSuper Smash Bros., Neckys sometimes appear in the sunset sky of theKongo Jungle stage, using their original sprites; they return with the stage inSuper Smash Bros. Melee,Super Smash Bros. for Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. Featureless bird silhouettes that are likely intended to be Neckys also fly across the distant background ofJungle Japes inSuper Smash Bros. Melee, returning inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Donkey Kong Racing[edit]

Neckys appear in the trailer of the canceledDonkey Kong Racing. They appear in the background at the start when the logo displays, and in a stampede at the end, whereKiddy Kong andEllie are accompanied by other enemies.
