Nabbit is a recurring character in theSuper Mario franchise. Making his first appearance inNew Super Mario Bros. U as an enemy, Nabbit would go on to become a playable character in bothNew Super Luigi U andNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Following this, Nabbit would continue to appear in various different series with varying roles, including theMario Golf,Mario Party, andMario & Luigi series, as well asSuper Mario Bros. Wonder.

Being a thief, he steals items, particularly fromToad Houses, before running away with them in his bag, which he almost always carries with him. This almost always serves as a hindrance, making Nabbit an antagonist, though he also appears as the occasional playable character along with other minor roles.

Nabbit is a purple rabbit with round eyes, long ears, and black limbs. He wears a white handkerchief with a drawing of a large mouth with sharpened teeth, similar toBowser Jr.'s mask, though there is no indication he actually works forBowser. He also wears orange shoes and white gloves. Additionally, aPlay Nintendo article conjectures that Nabbit has buckteeth behind the handkerchief.[2]

Nabbit resides in thePurple Toad House on theSecret Island, as implied byNew Super Mario Bros. U and confirmed inMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Several descriptions of the character throughout his appearances allude to him keeping close tabs onMario, as demonstrated by the records kept in the Purple Toad House inNew Super Mario Bros. U.

New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]

InNew Super Mario Bros. U, Nabbit appears throughout several levels as a minigame. When encountered by Mario and friends, they must chase him throughout the course within 100 seconds. The heroes can also tossKoopa Shells at Nabbit, slide into him, or throwiceballs orfireballs to stun him for a couple of seconds. Tapping him on the GamePad usingBoost Mode will slow him down, making it easier to catch him (multiplayer only).Yoshis can also eat Nabbit. Additionally, some stages receive changes when Nabbit is in them, mainlyHard Blocks being placed in areas to make it easier for Nabbit to traverse. Nabbit will otherwise pass through all other enemies unharmed.

When Nabbit is eventually caught,Toad will give aP-Acorn as a reward in exchange for the bag. If players fail to catch him three times, Nabbit will flee and disappear until conditions are met. Catching him over a bottomless pit also causes him to escape.

Nabbit appears in every world, exceptPeach's Castle andSuperstar Road, and catching him in each of these worlds will congratulate the player. Once he is caught in the necessary worlds, he will still appear in the same levels as before after playing three levels.

The player can first find Nabbit in seven levels:

He also appears if the player takes too long to open thechest after defeating the enemies in anenemy course, in which case he will steal the item from the chest. To do this, it takes 30 to 45 seconds.

While Nabbit generally appears and is treated as an individual in both this game and future appearances, thePurple Toad House on theSecret Island lists the amount of "Nabbits Caught" as part of the records.[3] Similarly, the official American website listed "Nabbits" among the new types of enemies present in the game.[4]

New Super Luigi U[edit]

New Super Luigi U
Nabbit finishing a level with the heroes inNew Super Luigi U

Nabbit reappears inNew Super Luigi U, this time as a new playable character (replacingMario from the original game). Unlike other playable characters, Nabbit cannot use power-ups (except forSuper Stars), hold anything, or ride Yoshis, but he is immune to all enemy attacks, though he can still get knocked back by tougher enemies, such asGrrrols orbosses. Also, despite his immunity to enemy attacks, Nabbit can still lose lives by falling intobottomless pits, lava, orpoison, getting crushed by certain obstacles, getting eaten by aCheep Chomp, exposure to volcanic ash, or running out of time.

The power-ups he collects are released as1-Up Mushrooms at the end of the level. Nabbit is also playable anytime in single player mode by holdingClassic Controller ZL Button on the GamePad or the Pro Controller or holding theB Button on the Wii Remote while entering any level, except theFlying Squirrel Ovation level inSuperstar Road world where aMii can be played as instead of Nabbit.

Once again, Nabbit still comes and steals the item from a chest if the player waits too long to collect a chest despite being on Luigi's side. If the player is playing as Nabbit, the screen fades after taking too long. In single player mode, Luigi must chase him like in the original, in the same world map locations as inNew Super Mario Bros. U.:

Super Mario Maker[edit]

Beginning with theversion 1.40 update ofSuper Mario Maker, a Nabbitcostume is available. The player can unlock it by beating the 100 Mario Challenge on Normal or a more difficult mode after a certain number of attempts. Once unlocked, it can be accessed in-game through the use of aMystery Mushroom, even though only theSuper Mario Bros. style permits the use of the costume.

Nabbit's power-up jingle, death jingle, and victory jingle are all taken fromNew Super Mario Bros. U; however, the jump sound is distinctive for the character, as a short squeaky noise can be heard while he jumps. Furthermore, the player can press the+Control Pad up button on theGamePad to make Nabbit face the camera and release a jolly laugh.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Nabbit reappears as a playable character inNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, retaining his abilities fromNew Super Luigi U, but has a new voice that resembles that of a Toad. Nabbit can now hold objects andBaby Yoshis (unlike inNew Super Luigi U) and is also playable in theNew Super Mario Bros. U levels for the first time. He can also bounce onYoshis, as opposed to only going through them like inNew Super Luigi U (he remains incapable of riding Yoshis however), and has swimming physics like thepenguin form. In addition, Nabbit is resistant to slipping onice.Toadette also has the aforementioned two abilities.

Nabbit is immune to enemies just like he is when running away from the heroes, and he can also collect lives from items. However, he cannot get any effects from power-ups; they always award the player with 1000 points instead. He is not playable inChallenge Mode. On the character select screens, he is labeled as "Easiest" ("Very Easy" in the British English version). When playing as Nabbit, 100 seconds are added to the timer. However, no bigger time bonus is given when both Nabbit and Toadette are being played. Additionally, any level completed in single player as Nabbit is marked as purple, although it is still possible to visit the next level.

Nabbit also retains the role of stealing items from Toad Houses. However, he does not appear in this capacity if he is being played as on the world map.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

Thwomps in Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Nabbit inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder

Nabbit reappears as a playable character inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder. Much like inNew Super Luigi U, Nabbit is a "beginner" character alongside theYoshis, and retains his immunity to enemy attacks, but can still lose a life by falling into an abyss like a bottomless pit, lava, or poison.[5] Unlike the Yoshis, Nabbit does not flinch or get knocked back after getting hit. Despite this, when under theHoppycat orWubbaWonder Effect transformations, he can still take damage and shrink into a small form like the other characters. He also retains his inability to use power-ups, instead turning them intoflower coins. Unlike in his previous appearances, Nabbit is able to ride Yoshis like the rest of the characters. He once again gains new voice clips, but this time byDawn M. Bennett.[6]

Mario Golf series[edit]

Mario Golf: World Tour[edit]

Nabbit after getting an Eagle

Nabbit appears for the first time in theMario Golf series, as a playable character inMario Golf: World Tour, exclusively asdownloadable content. He is obtained by purchasing the Flower Pack, either individually or via the Season Pass. His normal driving distance is 213 yards, while his star driving distance is 274 yards. His shot trajectory has a large draw that travels at the lowest height out of all characters, making his shots harder to fly over obstacles. However, they are the least affected by wind out of all characters. The player can also win aNabbit costume by completing a costume challenge atBowser's Castle. If Nabbit gets aPar, he swings his bag. If he gets aBirdie, he runs around the place. If he gets aEagle or better, he goes onto aNew Super Mario Bros. U level and flies in the air. If he gets aBogey, he hides in his bag, and if he gets worse than Bogey, he gets eaten by aPiranha Plant upon hiding in his bag.

Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit]

While Nabbit does not physically appear inMario Golf: Super Rush, his name can appear on the leaderboard.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In theSuper Smash Bros. series, Nabbit mainly appears in theMushroom Kingdom U stage inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U. AfterKamek changes the stage's layout, he may appear and attempts to catch fighters in his bag. If he does so, he blasts off and takes the fighter with him, knocking them out in the process (unless they get out in time before he crosses the blast zone by button-mashing). Nabbit can also be attacked, grabbed, and is affected by items like a regular fighter. He has knockback akin to playable fighters, and even has the same blast animation when crossing any blast zone (it is colored white, like CPUs). His fall speed is very fast, and can even jump in mid-air like most fighters for recovery.

Nabbit has two other miscellaneous roles inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U. He is one ofPrincess Peach's attempted "kidnappers" in the event matchEnough with the Kidnapping. Despite the theme of the challenge and his role alongside all other participants, Nabbit is the only one who does not exclusively target Peach, as his actions can also affect the other two kidnappers,Bowser orBowser Jr. Additionally, Nabbit is a random event inSmash Tour, moving along the map and picking up any item he comes across, and whoever bumps into Nabbit can retrieve the items he took.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Nabbit reprises his role on the Mushroom Kingdom stage inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. He also appears as a supportspirit inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate that causes items to gravitate towards the user. It can be summoned using aDuster core and any support core.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party 10[edit]

In theMario Party series, Nabbit made his first appearance inMario Party 10. He is a non-playable character who appears if Team Mario lands on aBowser Block -1 Space to take a Dice Block away from Bowser. He also appears in the credits if the dice lands on a Bowser mark.

Super Mario Party[edit]

While Nabbit himself does not physically appear inSuper Mario Party, artwork of him fromNew Super Mario Bros. U appears as one the guesses inAbsent Minded.

Super Mario Party Jamboree[edit]

Similarly toSuper Mario Party, artwork of Nabbit fromNew Super Mario Bros. U can appear inBig-Top Quiz inSuper Mario Party Jamboree andSuper Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

A screenshot of Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.
Nabbit assists Mario using a Bros. Attack.

Nabbit makes an appearance inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, making his first appearance in aSuper Mario RPG as well as his first appearance in theMario & Luigi series. His role in the game is to provide newBros. Attacks throughout the game ifMario andLuigi successfully capture him, effectively replacingAttack Pieces from the previous two games. At the start of the game, the trio will see Nabbit running off from Toads with several items in his sack, while dropping aRed Shell and aFire Flower before escaping. Most of the Bros. Attacks come from catching him, except Mario's final Bros. Attack,Toad Trail, which he receives afterKing Bob-omb is defeated.

As part of retrieving Luigi's final Bros. Attack,Mega Thwonk, the trio mustchase Nabbit and fight six battles. Three of these battles are against Nabbit, while another three are alongside him against Bowser's troops. It is possible to skip the first two battles against Nabbit by chasing him around until he engages in battle with an enemy.

  • After catching Nabbit, a battle against him starts. Nabbit's main attack is to throw a bunch of coins at the trio with the occasional spiked ball, most of which roll along the ground but some of which bounce. Nabbit follows this with a bag toss before taking a group of enemies out of his bag and making the trio fight them while he takes a nap. The three enemy groups are fourPaper Paragoombas, three stacks ofPaper Boos, and fiveMechakoopas. When Nabbit's turn comes up while the enemies are still on the field, he sneaks behind the trio and attempts to steal one of their hammers to bonk them with; this can be dodged by swinging the hammer just as he gets a firm grip on it, flinging him away. Hitting Nabbit causes him to drop coins instead of dealing visible damage, with the maximum amount of coins being earned in this quest being 950. Once the summoned enemies are defeated, Nabbit returns to the battle proper. Once he takes enough hits and drops a reward, he runs away and the battle ends.
  • When Nabbit engages Bowser's troops, he fights alongside the trio. In this state, he can do three things on his turn:
    • Jumps on a random enemy. Usually gets the firstAction Command right, but the second one is less often.
    • Uses a triplet of Mushrooms that heals all of the trio for 60 HP each.
    • Pairs up with either Mario or Luigi to kick aBuzzy Shell in the same manner as the3D Red Shell. The shell's speed is erratic, and missing a kick hurts the victim. Nabbit is always the one to make the final kick, which he will sometimes miss.

During the credits, Nabbit is seen three times. First, he is seen inDoop Doop Dunes running past the parade. He stops, takes a look at the landscape, notices thePapercrafts, and dashes away. Later, he is seen inTwinsy Tropics running away from aYoshi with aMelon. Finally, he is seen onMount Brrr with six Yoshis chasing him. He trips and drops theMelon, then quickly runs away while the Yoshis celebrate.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

Nabbit appears inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, where he is a recruitable ally found in the post game of theBowser Jr.'s Journey mode, during the levelThe Best Beast. However, he can only be recruited by using Ludwig'sNegotiate Captain Command. Bowser Jr. will also say that he wants him in his army when he is first encountered.

Nabbit appears as a new playable character inMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. He is only playable in100m in the Wii Uversion and100m and100m Plus in theNintendo 3DSversion. During his special action he speeds up and leaves a cloud of dust behind him. It is also possible to use Nabbit in Copacabana Beach in between tournament matches using him, which can be done after getting a medal in all Lvl. 3 tournaments. This game also marks Nabbit's first game with dialogue, where he speaks in short simple sentences.

For his victory animation, Nabbit will laugh before doing a back flip, attempting a midair split, and finishing off with a sideways flip that nearly sends him falling off the podium. For his second or third place animation, he will start running in place before doing a back flip and a twirl. For his losing animation, Nabbit will prepare to take off before he suddenly stops and lets his ears droop down.

Dr. Mario World[edit]

Nabbit appears as a doctor asDr. Nabbit inDr. Mario World. He was added on April 2, 2020. Dr. Nabbit is available as a special stage reward inWorld 24. His skill in Stage Mode is represented by him sprinting to the right with his sack, and it increases the player's score by 3000 points, which will do nothing in Daily Booster or special stages as they do not keep track of score. In Versus Mode, his skill transforms objects, mainlyviruses intoshells, exploders, or rainbowcapsules, where the amount of transformed objects is two at level 1, four at level 2, six at level 3, eight at level 4 and ten at level 5. The transformed objects are marked withBaby Rosalina's emblem despite being a different character.

He made his playable debut in theMario Kart series in theWild West Tour, with theLucky Seven as hisspecial skill. Nabbit makes his home console debut in the series as a playable character inMario Kart World. Unlike inMario Kart Tour, he does not constantly hold his bag during a race, though it does appear during some trick animations. His name and emblem also appear on a shipping container inMario Bros. Circuit.[8]

Nabbit also appears as a non-playable character in Free Roam mode, patrolling in various locations throughout the world while carrying his bag.[9][10] On approach, he flees from players and he drops coins and vanishes if run into. Catching him for the first time unlocks a Nabbitsticker.

Nabbit is available from the start, and shares statistics withToad,Toadette,Koopa Troopa,Shy Guy,Lakitu,Cheep Cheep, andStingby.Kamek has a chance of turning afflicted racers into Nabbit; this is the only single character the item's effects apply to.

Other appearances[edit]

The characterRavio fromThe Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has a similar appearance to Nabbit, as pointed out by several fans in the comments ofa Miiverse post with an in-development screenshot showing the character. However,Satoru Iwata, during the October 1, 2013 Nintendo Direct, officially dismissed the similarities as an unintentional coincidence. Additionally, Iwata added that the developers work so closely together that it is not surprising that similar designs could manifest in different, unrelated games.[11]

Nabbit is referenced inStar Fox Guard by a robot in the Chaos Class known as Nabbot that boasts similar characteristics. Its description mentions that it "races around stealing precious metals and then runs away".
