TheMystery Mushroom is apower-up that appears exclusively inSuper Mario Maker. It resembles the sprite of aSuper Mushroom fromSuper Mario Bros. with the question mark of a? Block printed on its cap. WhenMario touches one, he changes appearances to resemble another character or entity, an instance referred to asCostume Mario.

History[edit]

Super Mario Maker[edit]

A Mystery Mushroom gives Mario the form of one of various costumes, many of which are based on non–Super MarioNintendo characters. Many of the costumes can be unlocked by completing the 100 Mario Challenge mode on a certain difficulty or by scanning any compatibleamiibo, while some are unlocked by completing an Event Course.

Upon touching one while playing, Mario takes the appearance of the costume preset to the Mystery Mushroom in editing mode. (If no specific costume for the Mystery Mushroom has been set, Mario transforms into a random character instead.) It has the same effect as an ordinary Super Mushroom as it grants Mario an extra hit point and he can breakBrick Blocks, except it maintains or shrinks him down (depending on his current state) toSmall Mario's size, and also allows him tocrouch, which he typically cannot do in theSuper Mario Bros. game style in this size. Costume Mario cannot wear shell helmets.

Mystery Mushrooms are only available in theSuper Mario Bros. style of the game, as it is replaced by theSuper Leaf,Cape Feather, orPropeller Mushroom in the other game styles.

The Mystery Mushroom is similar to the charactercaps inSuper Mario 64 DS, which also allowed Mario to transform into other characters (and vice-versa). However, while a cap-wearing Mario kept his voice and gained the new character's abilities, Costume Mario keepsSuper Mario's abilities while gaining the character's voice or sound effects in most cases.

Unused appearances[edit]

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]

Mystery Mushrooms are absent fromSuper Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, with theWeird Mushroom taking its place as the style exclusive power-up; however, two glitches, one involving aBig Magikoopa, could be used to make them appear in-game. When collected, they turn Mario into Small Mario, but he also has the ability to break blocks and can take another hit from enemies likeSuper Mario. Mario can also crouch when the player held down on+Control Pad down orCircle Pad.[1] When the glitches were fixed, Mystery Mushrooms became fully inaccessible.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

The Mystery Mushroom would have returned inSuper Mario Maker 2 alongside Costume Mario, but they were scrapped from the final game because they required re-negotiations for licensing and royalty agreements with all of the third-party companies owning specific costumes.[2] However, the version 2.0 update added aMaster Sword power-up that transforms the player intoLink and grants additional abilities.
