Mud

Mud in theSuper Mario franchise is an obstacle that usually slows down player characters.
History[edit]
Mario Kart series[edit]
Super Mario Kart /Mario Kart: Super Circuit[edit]
Puddles of mud appear inSuper Mario Kart andMario Kart: Super Circuit as obstacles in bothChoco Island 1 andChoco Island 2, where driving through them slows the player can causes mud to be thrown behind the kart. A large portion of Choco Island 2 in particular is taken up by a mud puddle. Mud inMario Kart: Super Circuit is no longer shown being thrown behind the kart, and the mud was given a lighter texture.
Mario Kart: Double Dash![edit]
Mud inMario Kart: Double Dash!! appears throughoutWaluigi Stadium, composing most of the track's off-road areas.
Mario Kart DS[edit]
Mud inMario Kart DS appears throughoutWario Stadium and inDelfino Square's shortcut prior to the bridge.
Mario Kart Wii[edit]
Mud inMario Kart Wii reappears inGCN Waluigi Stadium andDS Delfino Square. The cave section ofN64 DK's Jungle Parkway has mud added to the off-road portions. The final area behind theFinish line atToad's Factory also features mud.
Mario Kart 7[edit]
Some mud appears at the starting section ofMaka Wuhu inMario Kart 7.
Mario Kart 8 /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
Mud inMario Kart 8 and itsport appears onDS Wario Stadium andExcitebike Arena. In theBooster Course Pass, mud also appears onGBA Riverside Park andGCN Waluigi Stadium.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
Mud inMario Kart Tour appears inSNES Choco Island 1,SNES Choco Island 2,GBA Sunset Wilds, andDS Luigi's Mansion, though it no longer slows drivers down, instead fulfilling an entirely aesthetic purpose. This type of mud also appears inRMX Choco Island 1 andRMX Choco Island 2.
Patches of thicker-looking mud appear in various other courses, such asSNES Donut Plains 1,SNES Donut Plains 2,SNES Donut Plains 3,GBA Riverside Park, andRMX Donut Plains 1. They typically cover areas closer to the inner edge of a wide curve. They slow drivers down to an extent, much like off-road sections do, but are shown as being part of the drivable track in minimaps. Drivers can also performMini-Turbo actions while on this type of mud, albeit without getting speed boosts; likewise, any speed boosts resulted from performing Mini-Turbos are interrupted upon entering a patch of mud. The sand patches inside the temple inWii Dry Dry Ruins function identically.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[edit]
Mud inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island makes up the ground in the swampy areas ofWorld 3 and makes hills slippery for the player character.
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
Mud inSuper Mario Galaxy appears on theBoulder Planet inGood Egg Galaxy. Various sections of mud are on this planet, and standing in it will result inMario's movement speed and jump height being reduced.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Mud inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 functions identically as in the previous game. IfRock Mario rolls over mud, he does not slow down. It is found on theCylindrical Planet inSky Station Galaxy and theBoulder Planet inBoulder Bowl Galaxy. Mud also appears inYoshi Star Galaxy, in which it is demonstrated thatYoshi can move effortlessly through mud without losing speed.
Nintendo Land[edit]
Mud inNintendo Land appears in theMario Chase stage Mud River Run. The mud separates the different sections of the stage and slows down any player who walks into it, covering them with mud. If the player dressed as Mario collects theSuper Star, they are not slowed down by the mud while it is active.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
Mud inDr. Mario World is used to coverMuddy Coins. The mud on it can be removed by hitting the coins. Once it is cleaned, the player can receive thecoin.
