Moon Shards (also calledmoon fragments)[1] are collectibles that appear inSuper Mario Odyssey. They are very similar toSilver Stars fromSuper Mario 64 DS,Super Mario Galaxy, andSuper Mario Galaxy 2 in thatMario must collect five of them in total in order to make aPower Moon appear. Unlike with Silver Stars, if Mario dies, he retains his Moon Shards. The total number of Moon Shards that Mario has collected can be seen at the top of the screen, similar to howStar Chips work inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2. That display goes away if Mario moves far away from the area with Moon Shards. Unlike the Power Moons themselves, they are the same color in every kingdom, being golden with a white border, and do not restore Mario'shealth when collected.

After a Power Moon found by collecting Moon Shards has been collected, the player can recollect those Moon Shards to recollect the Power Moon. However, the display for Moon Shards does not appear. As with already collected Power Moons, these Moon Shards are transparent. In 8-bit areas, they are greyer instead.
