Moon Coins are a type ofcoin appearing only inWorld Star ofNew Super Mario Bros. 2. They are likeStar Coins, but they have3-Up Moons imprinted on them. Despite playing a similar role, Moon Coins cannot be used in the way Star Coins can, meaning that they cannot be used to removeStar Coin Signs; collecting Moon Coins is required only to obtain a star icon on the player's profile, although collecting them all permanently opens everyToad House.
Moon Coins also appear inMario Golf: World Tour, where they can be obtained by the player by accomplishing challenges that are harder than their Star Coin versions. In Moon Coin challenges, the coins and rings are placed in trickier positions, the characters to challenge in match plays have leveled up, the wind is stronger, and back tees are used.
