“We've also got a newcourse part that makes these course themes even more fun; the Moon! Tap this icon here andday becomes night!”
Narrator,Super Mario Maker 2 Direct 5.15.2019

TheMoon is a course part introduced inSuper Mario Maker 2. It is a crescent moon with a face, which serves as an alternate form of theAngry Sun.

When the Moon is placed in a course in the editor mode, the current theme switches to a "night" variant with different properties from the normal daytime one. However, after it has been placed once, the night variant of every theme becomes selectable from the menu, and the Moon does not need to be placed again to trigger night mode from that point onward. In addition to unique level effects, nighttime levels have a starry background, with the exception ofGhost House,Airship, and Underwater levels, which have darker versions of their respective backgrounds; a music-box version of the level's music plays instead of the standard one. An 8-bit drum beat, differing slightly depending on whether the game style isSuper Mario Bros. orSuper Mario Bros. 3, plays while the player walks in aGoomba's Stiletto (in the Sky theme, only half this beat plays), and the laughing sound that plays while the playerflutter-jumps in a winged Stiletto is bit-crushed. The baby sound effect also varies in pitch and may sometimes play the sound of a screaming baby.

In gameplay, unlike the Angry Sun, the Moon does not harm the playable characters upon contact; when touched, it instead defeats every enemy on the screen, similar to aPOW Block or aLucky Star.

The Moon, along with the Angry Sun, is absent in theSuper Mario 3D World game style. As such, the night theme is not present in it.

Level effects[edit]

Themes[edit]

ThemeNighttime effect
GroundCauses many different behavior changes in certain items and enemies (see below).
UndergroundLevel is flipped upside-down. Also inverts the player's vertical controls: PressingUp Button causes the player tocrouch,ground-pound, slide down slopes, and enter upright pipes; pressingDown Button makes the player enter doors and downward-facing pipes; and the directions of climbingvines and flying with aLakitu's Cloud orKoopa Clown Car are reversed.
UnderwaterLevel is completely dark except for a small radius around the player and certain objects; the radius changes based on the status of theON/OFF Switch. The entire screen lights up while the player is under the effect of aSuper Star or when certainsound effects are activated.
Ghost House
AirshipCosmetic thunder and rain effects (except in theSuper Mario Bros. style); all enemies behave as if underwater butSpinies, which act in low gravity.
CastleCharacters swim in the air; everything else behaves as normal.
DesertStrongwinds blow (direction and frequency depend on game style, see below).
SnowAll walkable surfaces (including ridable enemies asSMB2 Mario) have reduced traction, akin toIce Blocks.
ForestWater is turned intopoison.Cheep Cheeps (except for the ability to thawFrozen Coins) andLava Bubbles behave as they do with lava in castle levels; eating a poisoned Cheep Cheep with aYoshi causes it to spit balls of poison like fireballs.
SkyLow gravity for all players and Spinies; all other enemies behave as if underwater. In theNew Super Mario Bros. U style, repeatedly performingMidair Spins allows the player to float in the air for much longer.

Cape FeatherDescends more slowly and in a wider motion.
Propeller MushroomMoves around in bursts, erratically changing its direction.
1-Up MushroomUsually replaced byRotten Mushrooms. If brought through aPipe from asub-area that contains1-Up Mushrooms usingYoshi, it will behave as normal.
