History[edit]
Mario vs. Donkey Kong series[edit]
Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis[edit]
InMario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, the success of the Mario Toy Company'sMini Marios allows them to expand and sell three newMini toys:Mini Peach,Mini Donkey Kong, and Mini Toad. Mini Toad's initial design has red spots but lacks a key for winding it up like the other Minis, the latter of which implies that it is not a wind-up toy. A commercial in the opening cutscene indicates the new products.
Mini Toads are playable characters in the game, but only in Special Kit 1 (which is unlocked by completing 3 minigames) for theConstruction Zone. If a Mini Toad comes in contact with aFire Flower, it will become aFire Mini Toad.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again![edit]
Mini Toads appear again inMario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!. After beatingJungle Rumble's DK level, the Rooftop levels become accessible. Mini Toads are found in the first three levels. After beating them, Mini Toads are unlocked to be used in Construction Mode, where they can be used along with other Minis. They can also be selected to replace Mini Marios in most levels (aside from DK, Key, and Rooftop levels) in the Showroom section of the option menu, but they act the same as the other mini toys. Selecting "Minis" will make Mini Toads appear alongside other Minis. Since each level has at least two minis, Mini Toads will appear in all levels except for the previously mentioned when this option is chosen.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem![edit]
The Mini Toads reappear inMario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!. Mini Toad is redesigned to have blue spots, possibly to reference Toad's coloration inSuper Mario Bros. 2. In the main worlds, Mini Toad appears in the fourth level of every world in a capsule that another Mini must walk into to break. It becomes available from the start in the Construction Zone to use in the Multi Door option, and can be unlocked for use outside of that option by submitting a level to the Challenge Mode contest or making 20 submittable levels. In plus mode, Mini Toads appear in many levels alongside other minis, and they must be taken to the goal in the right order.
Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move[edit]
Mini Toads once again appear inMario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move. Mini Toads are unlocked as playable characters by unlockingMany Mini Mayhem in the main game. After this, Mini Toads can be used in any of the game's levels. A Mini Toad is also unlockable as one of the toys in the Toy Collection, earned by collecting 30 stars.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars[edit]
Mini Toads reappear inMario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars. They function in the same way as in previous games. In the Main Game, they are first found inRunaway Warehouse in Level 3-2. They appear afterwards in many other levels, such as every Multi-Door level after Runaway Warehouse. They are also common in the Bonus Levels.
To use them for the Workshop, the player must buy them in theWinding Ravine section of theWorkshop Store for 25 stars.
Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge[edit]
Mini Toad returns inMini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge. It can be unlocked via a Toadamiibo. In this game, Mini Toad reverts to its original color scheme, and it has a key on its back like other Mini Toys. Mini Toad's unique ability isSmall Crawl, which has it insert its body into its head to shrink so that it can fit through narrow passages that other Mini Toys cannot.
Mario Kart 8 /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
Mini Toads appear inMario Kart 8 in theAnimal Crossing ×Mario Kart 8 DLC and in the base game ofMario Kart 8 Deluxe, present in the background near thestart/finish line inGBA Ribbon Road. They use the original design's red spots, and their bodies appear to be made of wood. This marks the only appearance of a Mini character in theMario Kart series.
