Mikey Mines[1][2] are underwater enemies inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2. They resemblenaval mines and have eyes that glow like headlights. They regenerate themselves after a few seconds after detonating. They can be defeated without harmingMario (orLuigi) if they are hit by aStar Bit or aKoopa Shell. There are faceless versions of Mikey Mines calledSpace Mines found suspended in midair throughout both games. Mikey Mines themselves are rare in comparison, appearing in only onegalaxy in each title.
Mikey Mines' eyes and name imply they are related toBullet Bills.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
Mikey Mines first appear in a dormant state until approached inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, at which point they make a radar sound, open their eyes, and watch Mario unless he goes away again. If detonated, they reappear in a small form before returning to normal. They appear attached to chains, with ones on long chains moving vertically along their length. They are exclusive toDeep Dark Galaxy, appearing in all missions (but cannot directly be encountered in the Prankster Comet missions). A group of them holds still around a shipwreck that must be destroyed by detonating them for the mission "Boo in a Box".
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Mikey Mines return inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and now move vertically without a chain. They are found individually in narrow watery passages, though they still respawn if destroyed. They appear exclusively inCosmic Cove Galaxy's second mission "Exploring the Cosmic Cavern", specifically in the secondAquarium Planet.

Etymology[edit]
The English "Mikey Mine" was first published on the English version ofMario Portal in 2022. It is an alliteration similar to the name forBullet Bill. Because the Japanese name for Mikey Mine,「キライラ」(Kiraira), seems to incorporate the Japanese name for Bullet Bill,「キラー」(Kirā), the connection may be deliberate. The enemy is generically referred to as a "Floating Mine" in the English version of theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia.[3] Because this enemy waslumped into theMine article on Super Mario Wiki prior to 2022 (then titled "Floating Mine"), the application of this name in the encyclopedia is potentially a consequence ofcircular reporting.
Japanese paratext forSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2 recognize Mikey Mines and Space Mines, their faceless variants, as distinct enemies with discrete nomenclature. However, theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia simply recognizes the Space Mine in theSuper Mario Galaxy 2 section of the book, and refers to Space Mines by Mikey Mine's name,「キライラ」(Kiraira). The same discrepancy exists on Mario Portal.

- Anunused landmine variant of Mikey Mine is located in the files ofSuper Mario Galaxy, under the nameJiraira.[13] It is fully functional, and it regenerates after detonation. Remnants of the unused landmine variant exist in theSuper Mario Galaxy 2 data as well, though the model itself has been removed.[14]
