- “Hidden inside thegreen block is the amazing Metal Cap. Wearing it, you won't catch fire or be hurt by enemy attacks. You don't even have to breathe while wearing it. The only problem: You can'tswim in it.”
- —Sign in theHazy Maze Cave,Super Mario 64
TheMetal Cap is an accessory that makes its debut inSuper Mario 64. It is usually found ingreen blocks, which become solid upon the player pressing theMetal Cap Switch in theCavern of the Metal Cap. The Metal Cap turnsMario intoMetal Mario, making him invulnerable and extremely heavy. Because of this, he cannotswim and instead sinks directly to the bottom of the pool ofwater. While underwater, Metal Mario is unable to use most of his abilities beyond walking and a standardjump. Metal Mario does not have to breathe and is therefore unaffected bystrange clouds and cannot drown. The effect lasts for 20 seconds. Besides the location where they are found, Metal Caps also appear inWhomp's Fortress,Bowser in the Dark World,Jolly Roger Bay,Hazy Maze Cave,Dire, Dire Docks, andWet-Dry World.
If Mario gets another power when the Metal Cap is in effect, they will combine. This is possible inDire, Dire Docks, where a green block is located directly beside ablue block, and inWet-Dry World, where the player can drain the water in the downtown area and collect the Metal Cap, then jump down and collect theVanish Cap. Collecting both gives Mario the powers of both hisVanish form and Metal form. An unused texture in the game shows a metallic version of the wings from theWing Cap, suggesting that it would have been possible to combine the Wing Cap with the Metal Cap as well.[1]InSuper Mario 64 DS, the Metal Cap itself does not appear. Instead,Wario becomes Metal Wario when he grabs aPower Flower but still retains the same properties as Metal Mario, and the music associated with the Metal Cap is retained.
A similar item, theMetal Mushroom Orb from theMario Party series, additionally transforms characters into metal forms.
InSuper Mario Odyssey, the Metal Cap (referred to as theMetal Mario Cap) appears as acap that can be purchased fromCrazy Cap stores, having a physical appearance similar to that ofSuper Mario 64. The cap becomes available after the player has collected 560Power Moons, and it costs 1,000coins. Aside from the ability to use the cap in conjunction with either the Mario 64 Outfit or the Metal Mario Outfit to enter a specific area in theMushroom Kingdom, the cap is aesthetic and serves no other gameplay advantages.
