Merle isMerlon's son andMerluvlee's,Merlow's, andMerlee's father. He lives inStarborn Valley and, along with theNinjis and certainToads, watches over theStar Kids until they are old enough to enterStar Haven.

History[edit]

During the events ofPaper Mario, Star Kids could not ascend because of the troubleBowser caused in Star Haven. Merle helps Mario and his partner in their quest to vanquish Bowser and his minions by providing them theScarf, one of the two keys to unlocking the door toShiver Mountain and theCrystal Palace (the other being aBucket, provided byMayor Penguin inShiver City a little later). The aforementioned quote is a riddle Merle recalled which is imperative to Mario findingMadam Merlar, ancestor of Merle and Merlon.

• "Merle" is an actual word with several varying meanings, though Merle's name would appear to have been derived from a simple corruption of either "Merlon" or "Merlin".
• In the Italian version ofPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, while Tattling Merlee,Goombella mentions her father theindovino ("seer").^[1]
