Mega Mario is a form thatMario and many other characters can take by obtaining aMega Mushroom in various games and media. This form allows players to grow into an enormous size, allowing them to destroy every enemy in their path and obliterate almost anything (includingWarp Pipes,Empty Blocks,Boos,Hard Blocks, and evenGoal Poles).
History[edit]
Super Mario-kun[edit]
Mega Mario appears in theSuper Mario-kun adaptations of the games in which the transformation appears, though it first appears in thefirst volume as the final transformation present in the hypotheticalSuper Mario Bros. 5, where it is activated using theBēda Capsule (one of the game's new power-ups).
In the Mario vs. Luigi mode of theNew Super Mario Bros. arc, Luigi tries to get the upper hand on Mega Mario, but he uses his smaller size and greater speed to beat him.
In theSuper Paper Mario arc, Mario, Bowser, and Peach use the power of thePure Hearts to defeatSuper Dimentio in their Mega form, without the use of aMega Star.
Mario Party series[edit]
Mario Party 4[edit]
InMario Party 4, the Mega Mushroom causes one to enlarge in size and hit twoDice Blocks. While Mega, the player can take 10 coins from any opponent the player squishes. TheSuper Mega Mushroom works the same way, but with three Dice Blocks.
Mario Party: Star Rush[edit]
InMario Party: Star Rush, in the Boss Battle minigameBowser's Space Race, when the player takes the Mega Mushroom, they grow to score more points.
Mario Party: The Top 100 /Mario Party Superstars[edit]
The Mega form appears in the minigameToadstool Titan inMario Party: The Top 100 andMario Party Superstars, replacing Super Mario from the original version. In the minigame, characters grow giant by obtaining the Mega Mushroom hidden in one of the severalBrick Blocks every round. Once the character obtains the mushroom, they are capable of knocking out other characters until they return to normal and the next round begins. Mega characters cannot jump and control their moves, however, instead charging in the direction they are facing.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
InSuper Paper Mario, whenMario,Luigi,Princess Peach, orBowser collect aMega Star, they will turn into giant versions of their 8-bit sprites fromSuper Mario Bros. (Mario and Luigi use their Small form sprites). As Mega Mario, Mario will be able to break any Brick Blocks, Pipes, and enemies in his path, as inNew Super Mario Bros. Mega Mario and Luigi are shorter and faster, while Peach and Bowser are taller but slower. In Chapter 3-1, there is a specific Koopa Troopa that uses a Mega Star, causing it to become theMega Koopa. According toThe InterNed, the music that plays while one of the characters is in Mega form (including theMega Koopa) is titled "An Unrivaled Battle".
Super Mario series[edit]
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
The Mega Mario form returns inNew Super Mario Bros., being obtained from the rareMega Mushroom. The more objects Mega Mario breaks, theMega Meter[1] will get filled in. If he fills in each segment by crushing a certain amount of objects, Mega Mario can gain up to five1-Up Mushrooms when the form wears off. If Mega Mario completes the level, he destroys theflagpole and obtains 8000 points, which will fill up one-fifth of the Mega Meter, ensuring at least one extra life is gained when doing so.
Ground Pounding as Mega Mario usually causes a group ofGoombas orcoins (or both) to fall from above. Mega Mario also has the ability to defeat almost all of the enemies in the game or squash any of the game's bosses in one hit, includingBowser in any of his forms. Mega Mario can also walk throughMega Unagis andSkewers. If Mega Mario falls into apit, the purple toxic water or lava, or iftime runs out, he can still lose a life. If the Mega Mushroom is activated in tight spaces, Mario's transformation will be canceled and the Mega Mushroom will return to the touch screen; however, if Mega Mario is crushed in any way, he will revert toSuper Mario and lose a life immediately after. Mega Mario also reverts to this form if he falls into toxic water or lava, though he remains in Mega Mario form if the player runs out of time. After the Mega Mushroom wears off, Mario reverts to Super Mario, regardless of whatever form he was in before using the Mega Mushroom. When Luigi grabs a Mega Mushroom, the sound effect is louder.
Mega Mario's size is inconsistently displayed. In-game (and in certain comparative artwork), Mega Mario is around the size of seven blocks, or around 3.5 timesSuper Mario's normal size. However, on the boxart forNew Super Mario Bros., Mega Mario is at least thirteen blocks tall, or around 6.5 times Super Mario's normal size.
The Mega Mushroom's colors wereoriginally going to be similar to those of a Super Mushroom, but was changed in the final version.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Mega Mariowould have returned inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, but it was removed from the final game. However, the form does return inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, again being obtained from theMega Mushroom, acting the same as in the previous game. Unlike inNew Super Mario Bros., though, Mega Mario can only gain1-Up Mushrooms (three of them) by destroying theGoal Pole, though this is only possible inWorld 5-6. Mega Mario overrides every other form exceptWhite Raccoon Mario, though this will give the player 1,000 points instead of putting the Mega Mushroom in the item storage, which is not possible in this game. Like inNew Super Mario Bros., the player reverts to their Super form regardless of what form they were in before obtaining the Mega Mushroom.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Mega Mario appears inSuper Mario 3D World and itsNintendo Switch port. making this game the form's second appearance in a 3DSuper Mario platform game afterSuper Mario 64 DS. The form functions identically to the way it does inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, allowing players to smash through objects and enemies, but it cannot destroy Goal Poles. However, in Mega form, they can ground pound to create a shockwave that hits nearby blocks and enemies. The heroes have scowling expressions in their Mega forms, except for Toad, as he only makes a frowning expression instead. Like inNew Super Mario Bros. andNew Super Mario Bros. 2, players revert to their Super form regardless of what power-up they had prior to obtaining the Mega Mushroom. Entering aWarp Box automatically reverts the player back to their Super form.
In theBowser's Fury campaign, although not actually his Mega form, Mario can take damage asGiga Cat Mario during any of the fights withFury Bowser (excluding the final boss) and revert to a powered-down version of himself in the same size as Giga Cat Mario. An unused angry and larger variation of the Mega Mushroom with a color-inverted cap named theGiga Mushroom also appears in the game's data. When used, it transforms Mario into a gigantic size.
Mario Kart series[edit]
Mario Kart Wii[edit]
InMario Kart Wii, Mega Mushrooms appear as items. When characters use the Mega Mushroom, they become temporarily giant, allowing them to squash opponents and get a speed boost, even on off-road terrain. However, they are not immune toLightning, invincible racers orBullet Bills; Mega players affected by Lightning revert to their original size, which cancels out the giant effect. When a racer is giant, the original Mega Mushroom theme fromNew Super Mario Bros. can be heard from them.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
Players can become giant again inMario Kart Tour with the return of the Mega Mushroom item. However, instead of squashing other racers, drivers that are giant simply cause them to crash. They can also take out large obstacles such asThwomps andmetal balls and obtain points in the process. Giant drivers are considerably more vulnerable than inMario Kart Wii, shrinking back to their original size if they are hit withBananas or any offensive item, including shells. They also do not get a speed boost; however, they do not get slowed down by off-road. The Mega Mushroom theme, in addition, does not play.
Mega-sized opponents appear inVs. Mega andTake them out quick! bonus challenges. In the former, the player must beat the opponent in a race, while in the latter, they must pop all of their balloons. These opponents retain their size for the whole race, and they can use items whenever they want. Sometimes, they can also use different special items.
Mario Kart World[edit]
Drivers again transform into their Mega forms with the Mega Mushroom inMario Kart World. Giant drivers once again flatten their foes when running over them. Additionally, they are now unaffected by Lightning.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, one ofBroque Monsieur's attacks during his battle with Bowser involves hitting a block and obtaining a Mega Mushroom. While mega, he attempts to ram Bowser, but this attack can be countered by punching him.
InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey,Bowser Memory M uses a Mega Mushroom to enlarge himself for his Brick Block breaking attack, rather than a Super Mushroom.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Luigi uses a Mega Mushroom as the pivotal part of theMega Thwonk Bros. Attack. He grows to his giant size fromMario & Luigi: Dream Team, and must charge at the enemy before smashing them away with his hammer.
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash[edit]
InMario Tennis: Ultra Smash, any character can temporarily transform into Mega form by picking up a Mega Mushroom the sidelineToads randomly throw onto the court. While in this form, players can hit the ball more easily.
Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit]
DuringToad'sSpecial Shot inMario Golf: Super Rush, he uses a Mega Mushroom to transform into Mega Toad to hit the ball.
