Mandrake
- “Whaaa!? This garlic looks...funky. Bah! I'll eat it anyway!”
- —Wario,WarioWare: Touched!
Themandrake (originally localized asNasty Garlic) is an uprooted and brown root with a sour face and a peculiar body shape that first appears inWarioWare: Touched! It is based on the poisonousreal-life plant of the same name that, according to legend, shrieks when dug up and kills anyone that hears it.
History[edit]
WarioWare: Touched![edit]
The Nasty Garlic first appears inWarioWare: Touched! inWario-Man's story. WhenWario feels sick, he goes to the fridge and tries to get somegarlic to cure his sickness. Though he accidentally grabs the Nasty Garlic, he eats it anyway. The Nasty Garlic causes Wario's immune system to attack theAwful Viruses (where the player can tap the Awful Viruses and get theWario Viruses to eat them), which then causes Wario to turn into Wario-Man. Once Wario-Man's story is completed, the player can drag the Nasty Garlic to Wario and turn him into Wario-Man in the main menu to play hismicrogames. Wario can return back to normal by being fed abomb. If the player drags the Nasty Garlic to anyone else, they get confused instead.
A similar-looking, root-like object appears in the opening cutscene ofAshley &Red's stage, as one of the four ingredients that has to be dragged into Ashley's pot. Like the Nasty Garlic, this object has roots shaped like a body and an annoyed expression with puckered lips on its bulb, but the bulb is yellow instead of brown.
WarioWare Gold[edit]
InWarioWare Gold, the incident fromWarioWare: Touched! is referenced whenAshley brings similar supposed garlic to the Potluck Gang.Red worriedly identifies it as mandrake root and warns that its cry can be fatal, promptingSpitz to cry like a mandrake as a prank, terrifying Red. If the player fails a microgame in this stage, the following card shows a mandrake. In addition, it is a subject of thesouvenir minigamesPumpkin Panic andRoot Awakening.
WarioWare: Get It Together![edit]
In Ashley's story inWarioWare: Get It Together!, several mandrakes invadeher mansion while she waits for dinner. When they attack her, she turns them into food. The majority of them are turned into donuts. Mandrakes appear in the microgamesThe Vampire Arose andVeggie Out! A mandrake root appears as aPrezzy and in one ofPyoro's character gallery images.
WarioWare: Move It![edit]

Notes[edit]
- In the English version ofSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U,Palutena's Guidance for Wario states that the garlic he consumes to transform into Wario-Man for hisFinal Smash is Nasty Garlic, despite it looking like a normal head of garlic; however, in the Japanese version, Palutena instead makes a note that the garlic is not the mandrake.[1] This is corrected inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, where Palutena's dialogue is edited to replace the incorrect usage of Nasty Garlic with simply "garlic".
