TheMagnet in theSuper Mario franchise is ahorseshoe magnet used byMichael Faraday in his experiments onelectromagnetic induction (despite him using anelectromagnet and not apermanent magnet like a horseshoe magnet). It appears only in the PC release ofMario's Time Machine, where in 1831, as Michael Faraday is on the cusp of discovering electromagnetic induction,Bowser time travels to steal the Magnet, preventing Faraday from finalizing his discovery.Mario takes back the Magnet fromBowser's Museum, time-travels to 1831, and gives it to Faraday, albeit without knowing that it belongs to him. Mario can gain clues of the Magnet's proprietor by talking to other characters within the time period, includingCharles-Gaspard de la Rive, who says that it might belong to Faraday, andSarah Barnard, who says that she only needs the "magnetic personality" of her husband, Michael Faraday. Mario is certain that the Magnet belongs to Faraday and gives it to Faraday while he is busy experimenting. Faraday happily puts the Magnet to use in his experiment, confirming his theories.
