Magic Wands (ormagic wands) appear in theSuper Mario franchise as objects that are commonly held by theKoopalings. InSuper Mario Bros. 3, Magic Wands are stolen from theMushroom World'skings and are used to transform them into various helpless creatures (which vary between the original version and theSuper Mario All-Stars andSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 reissues). The Koopalings also use the wands to shoot harmful projectiles when encountered as bosses.Mario and/orLuigi have/has to retrieve them in theairship to restore the king and proceed to the nextworld.

Magic Wands appear again inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, as the standard tools of the Koopalings with no relation to the kings, and have appeared in many other games in the same manner.

History[edit]

Sevenroyal magic wands[1] inSuper Mario Bros. 3 were stolen by the Koopalings, each from one of the seven kings, and used to turn the kings into other creatures; the Koopalings drop the wands upon defeat. InSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, they also bounce upwards upon being hit by attacks. InWorld-e, despite the wands being returned to their rightful owners,Morton,Lemmy, andLudwig were shown to wield them in battle again. The wands' standard projectiles in this game are "magic smoke rings,"[2] whereas in subsequent games, the typical spells are instead magical fireballs that bear the Magikoopa insignia as a trail.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

The Koopalings holding Magic Wands inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii

Magic Wands inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii are used by the seven Koopalings against Mario and other player characters. Like inSuper Mario Bros. 3, each Koopaling can generate spells of varying speed and intensity, with the exception ofWendy and Lemmy, who utilize glowingrings andcircus balls, respectively.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Magic Wands inNew Super Mario Bros. 2 are used in combat by all of the Koopalings except Wendy. Additionally, although Lemmy retains his wand's ability to conjure circus balls, Morton's normal spells are instead replaced with conjuring spiked balls in his fight with Mario. All the Koopalings use their Magic Wands again in the final level, where they attempt to defeat Mario by turning him into stone and making him fall inlava. The Koopalings eventually utilize their wands once again near the ending, this time to aid Bowser by having him grow larger, although this also results in them being hit by the newly enlarged Bowser, similar toKamek inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.

New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Koopalings
Three of the seven Koopalings with Magic Wands

New Super Mario Bros. U has most of the Koopalings use different weapons.Larry,Iggy, andLudwig continue to use Magic Wands. As usual, Larry shoots out blue fire with his wand. Iggy, as per usual, shoots out green fire with his wand, although he also fires red fireballs that, upon making contact with the magma in his cabin, summonMagmaarghs. Ludwig fires his regular blue fire spells in threes as usual. However, he also utilizes the wand to create two false duplicates of himself and the wand. The clones fire two magic blasts. Additionally, the orbs of the Magic Wands now have a purple glow to them whenever each of the three Koopalings is casting his fireballs.

New Super Luigi U's boss battles are the same as inNew Super Mario Bros. U, so Magic Wands continue to appear. The same is true for the enhanced port of both games,New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Magic Wands inSuper Mario Maker 2 are used by the Koopalings to attack, including in theSuper Mario World style, where the Koopalings originally did not use them. In theSuper Mario Bros.,Super Mario Bros. 3, andSuper Mario World styles, the Koopalings' Magic Wands are thrown into the air upon defeat.

In theNew Super Mario Bros. U style exclusively, the spells that Iggy, Morton, Ludwig,Roy, and Larry shoot out from their Magic Wands have fiery properties, and can be used to meltFrozen Coins and lightBob-ombs. In the other styles, only the fireballs that Morton shoots from his wand have this property.

DIC cartoons[edit]

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Magic Wands onThe Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 are used to create and resolve mischief, and some of the Koopas own Magic Wands themselves, as well as others by the kings of the Mushroom World.

Nintendo Adventure Books[edit]

Morton uses his wand to turn theMushroom King into a rabbit inLeaping Lizards. However, the wand's magic works only one-way, so whenLuigi tries to use the wand to reverse the spell, instead of turning the king back to normal, it turns him into a giant rabbit. InKoopa Capers, Wendy steals her brothers' wands in order to combine them with her own using a potion she learned about in Bowser's copy ofReptile Magic and VCR Programming Instructions.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

InMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Roy, Wendy, Ludwig, and Larry also utilize their wands when their partner is taken down, with Mario, Luigi, and/orPaper Mario needing to counter the spell they cast. Morton uses his wand to turn the player'sBattle Cards into cards that have Morton's face on them that inflict random effects that are unknown to the player.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Iggy, Lemmy, Ludwig, and Wendy utilize their wands in their battles. Iggy uses his wand to swap Mario and Luigi's POW stats, Lemmy and Wendy use their wands to create duplicates, and Ludwig creates a magic attack capable of dealing 999 damage on Mario and Luigi, though before the enormous magic attack descends on the Mario Bros., Ludwig conjures a barrage of blue fireballs from his wand first before the dangerous magic attack lands on one of the Mario Bros. If the magic attack is countered with aHammer, the magic attack knocks out Ludwig.

In the modeMinion Quest: The Search for Bowser, only Iggy and Ludwig utilize their wands. Iggy is able to use his wand for hisSpecial Skill Power Up, raising the POW of himself and his teammates. Ludwig is able to use the Special Skill Chain Shot.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

In the modeBowser Jr.'s Journey, Wendy utilizes her wand to create duplicates as part of her First OfficerCaptain Command,Doppelganger. In addition to using his wand for attacking, Ludwig uses his wand to fire magic attacks on enemies charging their Special Skill attacks to stop them from attacking as part of his First Officer Captain Command,Stop and Drop.

The Koopalings and their Magic Wands inPaper Mario: Color Splash

The Koopalings also use wands inPaper Mario: Color Splash, and the seven colors on which the whole game is based are the colors of the gems of these Magic Wands. Morton, Wendy, Roy, and Lemmy also transform their wands into an object (a hammer, a giant golden ring, a Paint Blaster, and a ball, respectively). It is also revealed in the game that, while their wands have tremendous power, even they have their limitations. Specifically, Lemmy was forced to use a "sleight of hand" to make off with the Green Big Paint Star during a performance because his normal abilities via the Magic Wand could not actually impact the Green Big Paint Star.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

The Koopalings use their wands inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, where they replace thehammer that is used in their up aerial attack, as well as their up special,Abandon Ship.

Dr. Mario World[edit]

InDr. Mario World, Dr. Ludwig, Dr. Larry, and Dr. Iggy wave their Magic Wands in the animation for their skills in Stage Mode. All three eliminate a number of a specified stage element by setting them aflame. Their skills in Versus Mode presumably have a similar theme, but only the flames are shown. Instead of eliminating stage elements, the skill adds a number of that element to the opponent's stage. Dr. Ludwig affectsice, Dr. Larry affectscolorful crates, and Dr. Iggy's skill affectsfloatie viruses.

General information[edit]

Appearance[edit]

It has been requested thatmore images beuploaded for this section. Remove this notice only after the additional images have been added.Specifics: Images of the magic wands inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii and/orU, maybe alsoSuper Mario Maker 2 in the NSMBU style.

The seven Magic Wands look like large silver rods (gold in the sprites forSuper Mario Bros. 3) with round dome-shaped gems at the ends of them in different colors. The wands' gems are vividly colored, and those are where the spell blasts are released from.

The Koopalings' Magic Wands vary in color from game to game. In more modern styled appearances, the gemstones are given the same colors as in the artwork forSuper Mario Bros. 3, whereas in 8-bit and 16-bit styled appearances, the gemstone's color matches with the Koopaling's main coloration in that appearance.

Abilities[edit]

The Magic Wands were capable of transforming people into animals/plants, although it is implied that they can also be used to restore them to their original form. In addition, the wands can also fire three-ring shots/spellballs, or, in some cases, summonrings (Wendy O. Koopa), spiked balls (Morton Koopa Jr.,New Super Mario Bros 2 only), ormagical balls (Lemmy Koopa). At least in Iggy and Ludwig's case, the wands can also either summon enemies such as Magmarrghs or create duplicates of the wand's wielder. Although the wands have all of these abilities, it appears they do not affect other magical items as, inPaper Mario: Color Splash, Lemmy's wand does not appear to affect the Green Big Paint Star.
